We are transitioning this year into full CM although we have been using many of her methods the last two years. My question regards my oldest. He is 13 yo will be 14 in November. When he was learning to write I did not correct the way he made certain letters (bad mom + first child = guinnea pig). Anyway, his handwriting is not horrid but looks very “elementary” if that is the right way to put it. I was thinking of having him learn italics as a way to correct his writing without offending him. Not sure if this makes sense but I could use some advice.

    Thanks, Angie

    HI Angie,

My DD isn’t as old as your son, she is just turning 9, but she just hated handwriting.  I started out w/ D’Nealian, but decided Italics would be better since it wasn’t so loopy.  It has helped her out tremendously.

I know some say that children who just learn Italics have a hard time reading other people’s handwriting in cursive, but I’ve been teaching her, so I don’t think that is a real issue.

Oh, I also bought the StartWrite software, where I can type up my own copywork sheets, and I have my DD trace them regularly, plus she writes in her Getty-Dubay Italic handwriting workbooks.  Tracing has been invaluable for her in taking the pressure off of her, and her handwriting is developing quite nicely.  I remember a homeschool mom on one loop saying she still had her 10 yr old DD trace some copywork every week and she had beautiful, wonderful handwriting.  Don’t know if I’ll be doing that when my DD is 10, but for now, its been working wonderfully.

I just love the elegance of Italics, and was thinking of getting the adults book, just to tweak my own handwriting. Tongue out

This program has been wonderful for us, and I wish you the best.

    Ginnie
