Hi All
I noticed in the description for Joshua through Malachi & Ancient Greece (and egypt too) it mentions Hands On activities.   Would anyone share some examples of some?
Also, I really want to include some neat artsy type projects to enhance the learning (not too twaddly – ie just cut and paste), but some more quality pieces. Maybe something that could be completed throughout a month long stretch, not something every week. We don’t need to make a paper bag outfit for example, but I was thinking it might be fun to blend “handicrafts” and a history related project together and end up with a more quality piece.
Does anyone have any good ideas/resources for this?

On that page that describes Joshua through Malachi & Ancient Greece, click on the Links, updates, & tips link (upper right hand side right under the Shopping Options box) and it will take you to the hands-on project ideas. You can do the same for any of the handbooks to see hands-on project ideas.

Another option is the Hands & Hearts history kits. I like that it comes with everything you need in the box and while we’ve not completed every project, we’ve enjoyed those we’ve done.

YES! Thank you all! This is precisly what I was hoping to find.   🙂 Between these projects and the ones that go with Sonya’s book, I think we are in some fun activities. I’m so happy to have found this group. You have been such a blessing to me. Thanks again. 🙂

I have a question regarding the history acitivities on the Hands & Hearts site that has been mentioned. I see that they have Evan-Moor History Pockets; have any of you used them and felt they were CM enough or did you tweak them abit??
The reason I ask is that I’ve always liked Evan-Moor products, but have gotten away from all of the workbooks that we had been using. I love doing history the CM way, but I do have some of the History Pockets and would use them if they weren’t considered *busy work/twaddly, etc.*
I see they have other products to choose from so maybe those are the activities you are referring to??
The ones I do have will eventually have a spot in the module we are in but now I would have a much better idea of when to plug them into our homeschool (where they make sense) then I did before:)

I don’t use the Evan-Moor pockets, they are just not our thing, but we have used the H & H kits. We’ve made an Egyptian paddle doll, cleaned an actual ancient Roman coin, made a Roman mosaic, etc.

We had the Civil War and Native Americans pockets and when we really started doing history CM style I felt they were a little too *fact-ish* and not *alive* enough, make sense?? I set them aside before we finished them and started Mod. 5 from this site. My kids did like them and in another homeschool life I would’ve had them finish, but now I’m looking for the activities you mentioned. Their definitely more CM friendly.

We actually started the Ancient Civilizations pocket today. I thought it filled in a couple of gaps (ie what is history) in kind of a fun way. My daughter is a bit artsy, so I figured this would scratch that itch. I also wanted to do a little bit with Ancient mesopotamia and this seemed like a way to work it in, but we are going to be reading lots of living books to go along with it. I plan to spread out the egypt and greece units as we study them and figured it would be a nice piece to put into her portfolio for the end of year assessment she needs to have.   However – if we were trying to do ALL of the pockets in one year, I think I’d go nuts. But just 1 for egypt and 1 for greece I can handle I REALLY like the H&H kits I saw, I can’t wait to start those, but this adds a little artsy activity in.   She had fun doing it, but we only did 1 piece of the pocket. I plan to spread it out. HTH

I understand what you mean Kelly. I was just all over the place with history last year and that was one of my many purchases. I’d use some of the one’s we have now only because my head is screwed on tighter than it was in the past, plus, I’d feel it was more purposeful. It wasn’t that I didn’t like them it was just that when we started Mod. 5 I just couldn’t stick with something that was further down the *timeline* and make my kids crazy. My kids do like to have something that looks like they have *finished* a topic or whatever, and I may use them in the future with an actual plan:)
This coming school year will be our first completely CM so I’m trying to stay as focused as I can. I have a tendency to jump around and this will be my first year making a complete plan and (trying) to stick to it. Actually, I used to think I had a plan, but compared to the Planning Your CM Education, I would say I was a bit scattered:) And, I tend to think I’m pretty organized, other people think I am, too, but I’m finding that I could’ve used the CM system to fine tune my planning a long time ago.

I think I am going to use the Ancient Greece and Rome kit with the Joshua through Malachi. Looks like just what we are wanting!

So does the kit only make one of each thing? I have two kids at this age, so would I need 2 sets? My kids would eat this up! =)
