Nope – my dd has been sewing from 4yo. Of course, that is her bent :). One may take to it well and the other may not. Just lay it out there. Teach it and see what they can do!
Just occurred to me that regular needles could hurt at this age – are we talking about kids’ sewing kits? Like with plastic needles? I would be very careful about using regular needles with a 4yo.
I know that back in ‘the day’, however, the young children sewed with the regular needles. If you don’t mind your dd getting poked, it won’t take them long to figure out how to do it correctly with a regular needle! If you are squeemish, however, stick with the kids’ kits.
My DC (10, 7, and 5) like sewing with larger metal needles. They aren’t as sharp as regular needles, and they are able to use them on felt and regular quilting fabric. They are slightly smaller/sharper than the large plastic blue needles. Maybe try a couple needles and see what works for your girls. I also have to supervise them a bit with the pins and needles, or they’ll lose them all over the house.
My kids have been embroidering and sewing with regular needles for a while now. My 4 year old sews with a regular, metal, pointy needle. She sticks herself occasionally, as did her older sister who also started at 4, but it doesn’t kill them. lol To be honest, they have only actually stuck themselves once or twice, even though they are young.
Another option for really little ones is to embroider with yarn onto burlap. You can draw something large, with straight lines, onto a piece of burlap and they can stitch on the line using a plastic darning needle.
Yes, Holly, so true about losing them! Each girl has a pin cusion and has been told the importance of each pin or needle going directly into the cushion after use.
My dd6 is learning her different stitches with a large regular needle threaded with embroidery floss. She is making a sampler on a small square of felt with all the different stitches she is learning on it. She has stuck herself only once badly (bad enough to make her cry a bit but not really much actual “damage” done. A little band aid and all was well again ; )) and once or twice less severely. She is doing very well and really enjoying the fact that she is doing “real” sewing instead of what she thinks of as “kid sewing”.
I TOTALLY agree with supervising the use of needles, though. They end up everywhere even when we ARE being careful! My dh usually finds them…most often with his feet. Though once I found a very large embroidery needle that had worked it’s way into our couch cushion. I found it with my bottom…and it was a very large and painful shock! After that I was much more vigilant about supervising their use and proper storage!
