I am purchasing the Handbook of Nature Study and saw that there are two options on amazon. The newer one is nearly twice the price of the older one and it appears it was revised only one year later. For those of you who have one of these versions, any thoughts as to why such a large price variance? Is it really worth it to purchase the more recent version?

I haven’t seen the two to compare how different they may be in content, but I have the black one with the butterfly on the cover and I believe this is the edition that Barb references in the challenges on her Handbook of Nature Study blog (http://handbookofnaturestudy.blogspot.fr/), so if you were planning to follow along there, it would probably be easier to use the black one (which it think is also the less expensive of the two?)

I actually did purchase the one with the red cover (which is not one of the two I mention here), originally, and realized the pictures were fuzzy and hard to make out. I wouldn’t recommend it. Hence, I’m now asking for a little more info before I dive into the next purchase :).

Everybitterthingissweet,  I do not have the newer one but do have the first one you are looking at. Looking at my copy, I personally would not spend the extra for the newer one.

I ended up purchasing both, to compare (so, yes, I had three when all was said and done :)). The one with the black cover, which was actually copyrighted in 1984, is cheaper but a much better option. The pictures are clearer and the pages and print are larger and easier to maneuver.
