I was noticing this book in the bookfinder, and for now have added it onto our schedule in the CM organiser. I was wodering though, how mnay people use this book, what do you think of it, or would you suggest just having a set day for nature study and doing “whatever?” I have heard good reviews about the book, so wondering what peoples thoughts are!
For me, the most useful way to use this book has been as a teacher resource. When we are going to try to learn a little more about, say, birds, I’d read the sections myself for ideas of questions to ask and things to observe. Occasionally I’d read a story or something that I thought the children would like. But mostly I used it for me. I like AO’s idea of doing a nature study “focus” –trees one term, fungi one term, etc. That proved helpful to us–we still DID lots of other things then as well, but tried to pay more attention to the focus topic. And for this HNS really comes in handy. But I wouldn’t assign it as reading to your kids or even read most of it to them–it’s mostly helps for the parent/teacher, and at that it’s invaluable. It also isn’t perfect as a field guide–make sure you have lots of those available.
I agree with Michelle. Funny, I just pulled our copy out this morning because our goat just gave birth to twins (cute!!). It did have a good section on them and now I can answer at least a few questions and also know what kinds of questions to ask the children for observation. I also have found some wonderful poems in the book to read aloud. Lastly,I just find the way the author writes to be very inspiring.
Yes, and they are so very adorable!!! We’re feeding them with a bottle. I’m going to try to figure out how to post a picture. Or maybe I could make them my ‘little-tiny-photo-next-to-my-posts’…whatever it is called.:)
we have been using it as part of an online bloggers natures study. i bought it several months ago and have picked it up at various times to find out information. you can get this book online for free- but it is gigantic! still if anyone wanted to see it for free. you can probably find it via the blogger here.
