Wow! Thanks for the input ladies! I have been thinking about why I don’t like to go besides the $$. I used to go w/ my mom. She has been gone nearly 4yrs now. When we did go, we made it a fun time. Our hairdresser of many yrs moved about 50 minutes away. So we would leave early morn, get breakfast, go to her house for not only haircuts but visiting, and then we would have lunch on the way back. We had great times doing this. Even when I got married and moved away, I made it a point to come for a visit and we went on our escapade! 🙂 Maybe that is something that I associate w/ my mom, I guess! Bittersweet memories!
Anyhow, my dh cuts our son’s hair. And sometimes he cuts his own hair! I have helped trimming it before. My hair is thick and curly! I am just nervous about letting dh cut it! But, hey it has to look better than it does! 🙂
As for coloring it, I have done that on several occasions. It just lasts when I get it done professionaly. And yes Becky, it does get expensive for them to color it w/ long hair! I have been going gray since my early 20’s! So I have been coloring it since then! However, have not colored mine in about 4 months. So lots of gray is showing..along w/ multicolors! LOL! I have actually had ladies stop me and say, I love your hair color..all 3! NO KIDDING! They were serious! And a college guy asked one time, how do you get your hair to have that gray streaks like that..that is neat! LOL! I told him it was a la natural!! Ha ha!
It is great to hear how you all handle it! And I don’t buy clothes, do nails, tanning, etc… I suppose that would be a nice treat to me and I should just do it!!!
Neat thread, though. I have mine cut and colored professionally every 4 weeks. Every 3-4 visits, I have it highlighted, too. I pay a bundle, but I like it short and not gray!!! Hubby likes it, too. I have a FABULOUS hair stylist and in fact, she is the only one I’ve ever used who can make a super short cut very feminine. That’s whay I’m willing to pay her so well!
I began graying at 18 and have been 95% gray (hidden ) for years now and I’ve got a ways to go to 40. My natural hair color was almost jet black, but I wear it lighter now because jet black with gray/white roots is not a pretty sight! If I weren’t so gray and if my hair didn’t grow SUPER CRAZY fast, I’d grow it long again. However, with how fast it grows, I can never put it up or gray roots show. When I met my husband in 1993, it was almost to my waist and still black!
I am I the process of growing out a pixie (super short) cut. When it was short It was a stretch to go every 8 weeks. and at $50 a cut that adds up. It’s usually 1-2 times a year for me, when it’s long. I’m in desperate need of a cut right now, I need to get the back trimmed up, I think I’m going to get a little bob.
I have cut my own hair a lot of times, my husband has cut it/dyed it for me, my sisters have cut it. I’m not one of those girls that cry over a hair cut. To me it’s just hair it grows back.
I really like to have fun with color. I’ve been strawberry with blonde highlights, black, brown with blonde/black/red chunky highlights, and really bright red orange. It is fun and a lot less permanent than tattoos. (If I could ever make a decision I would get those too, in my head I am just a girl who loves Jesus and has tattoo sleeves, but in reality I don’t even have one or anything but my ears pierced)
I last had mine cut in early April. Probably won’t bother getting it cut again until I start seeing split ends. My dh cuts his and our boys hair with the buzz trimmers. Our youngest can go several months between cuts because it lays really nice. Dh and older son’s hair sticks out all over the place when it starts to get too long. Dh colours my hair for me, too. I’ve been seeing gray since my late 20’s, but didn’t finally give in to dying it until about 3 years ago. (I turned 40 in Nov.) My younger sister who has been completely white since her mid twenties used to dye her hair every six weeks. Though her hair is naturally medium-dark brown, her stylist suggested she try blonde and now she can go 8 weeks or more between colours, and it looks really natural on her. Mind you, she’s single and can afford to spend all that money on her self.
What a fun topic! My dh used to cut my hair, for many years actually, and that worked out well. Then maybe 5 years ago when his health was really failing and he coudn’t cut it, I started going to the walk-in type places and discovered that long layers looked so much nicer with my fine hair. I do wait too long (in terms of how it looks) to go for trims… I probably average 2-3 times a year.
BUT (and not trying to scare you off, but what would this thread be without a few “bad hair” stories??)… the last cut I got was THE WORST cut I ever had. I totally explained what I wanted very thoroughly and she cut it so differently than what I wanted. And honestly I felt like she cut it like HER hair. And she was like 15 years older than me and had a common “older lady” haircut. I know, this is so judgmental of me. So shallow. I’m awful. I was annoyed with myself for caring so much about my hair! lol So here I am with this “older lady” haircut and NOT liking it — truth be told, it’s worse because I feel like I’m moving into that older lady category of age but in my mind I’m still in my 20s and so this haircut just hit me in a bad place, emotionally. lol
I actually went BACK to the place and complained and ended up having to confront my tormentor because she walked in during the middle of my discussion with manager. I decided to “complain” because she really did not do what I wanted. At all. AND I couldn’t even figure out what to do with it. Ugh. Just hated even walking by a mirror.
So… been growing it out since March and it really needs a trim in certain spots but then other places need to grow more. I also started taking a vitamin supplement (can’t remember what it is) that is supposed to make hair grow faster — that’s how desperate I was! lol
But even after all that I *will* go get my hair cut again. I’m sure you will have a good experience! Maybe I should consider going someplace that is not a cheap walk-in? We shall see. The good thing about a bad haircut… it eventually grows back. 😉
I have been growing my hair out at the request of my hubby for the past two years. It was right at my chin; now it’s between my shoulder blades. He still wants it longer! Men! Ha!
When we met and got married, my hair was naturally blonde. Then I had kids, and my hair got darker and darker. Naturally, it’s somewhere between mousy brown and medium brown. Hubby and I both prefer me as a blonde, so I get my hair high- and low-lighted and cut every 6-8 weeks. I figure if my husband knows how much it costs and still wants it done anyway, I’m not going to argue! I really enjoy visiting with my stylist (who has decided to homeschool for the first time this year!), and I enjoy that investment in myself.
Since beginning thyroid and adrenal supplements for hypothyroidism, my hair has stopped falling out and is finally growing more quickly!
I get my hair cut about every 4-5 months (or until it starts really bugging me!). I’ve always had it short because it is super thin. If I let it grow to my shoulders it starts to look really stringy. No coloring needed so far (I am 32) but I started getting grays here and there when I started having kids. Maybe there is a connection??
Going to the salon is a treat for me. I take a whole afternoon and go to an Aveda spa up here in the mountains sometimes with a friend or family member. It is so nice to relax in their common room with a cup of tea and a book. The cut is $40+tip which I think is reasonable because they use high quality products and really know their stuff and I get to use the spa facilities to relax. It’s about the “experience” for me as much as the cut. Ahhhh…. makes me happy just thinking of it.
I so dislike spending money on a haircut! I cut my husband’s and kids’ hair but have always paid someone to cut mine (after waiting until I just couldn’t stand it any longer!). I learned how to cut my own bangs several months ago by making a triangle (like an obtuse triangle- the point being on top of my head where I want my bangs to start then parting it down the sides of my head to frame my face). I brush that section of hair I want to be my bangs together right to the middle of my face making sure its centered and then holding it with my fingers (or small hair tie) I cut right under where my fingers are holding it (making sure that’s the height where I want my bangs to fall). I don’t cut straight across but with scissors pointed down when trimming. Now that I have bangs, I trim them the same way (dry, not wet) and I like the way they turn out… with non-hair cutting scissors even!
I also did the 5 minute layered DIY haircut where you brush all your hair into a ponytail close to your forehead and cut where you want. I made sure to read lots of responses on it before I tried it so I hopefully wouldn’t mess it up too much. I have fine mostly straight hair and I read it worked best with that type of hair if you brush it really well into a ponytail dry (not wet). Also, the closer to your forehead the ponytail is the more layers you get. I decided to do a tryout and put the ponytail not quite as close to my forehead for longer layers. My hair was pretty long so I had some play room. Anyway, it turned out nice, but I also did my bangs too so not sure how it would look without bangs. Has anyone else done the 5 minute layered cut?
Please excuse my info overload, just excited I can finally cut my own hair and not have to pay someone! Not that I see any harm in going to a salon, it’s just too much $ for us. 🙂
Well, as some of you can imagine, I had a VERY short “cut” for a while.
Just before Halloween last fall it was just falling out in clumps, so DH shaved it. I was very shiny for what seemed like a long time and I’ve not had a cut since then. I think I have the ‘baby hair’ situation where there are now curls and waves where there never were before. I’m afraid that if I cut them off they will be gone forever, but DH has decided he likes my hair short, and I’m actually liking it too.
BC (before cancer) I had long, elbow length hair, all one length that DH or I would cut once or twice a year with my quilting shears. On his own hair, DH has used a FlowBee (you MUST google it; it’s a riot) to the consternation and guffaws of well, everyone, for at least 10 years now. He has saved bundles with that thing, not having to pay for a haircut in so long and just plugging it in to the vacuum. I might have to try it out as well, cuz I’ll be darned if I’m gonna go to a salon. (No offense, just not my cuppa tea.)
Interesting ideas here…. thanks for bringing it back to light, Christie.
I lost my hair dresser. Her health was getting bad and she stopped cutting.
I have tried a few people but could not find anyone as good as her.
For color I spend about 3 $/month on Henna and love the color. I have been using that for about 6 years. I mixt different kind of teas to get it more red. No chemicals. Everything we put on our body is absorbed through the skin. I could see this clearly putting beet juice in my henna and how that changed the color of urine (and I had not eaten any).
What a fun thread. The best part was hearing how many of you buzz your boys! DH or I buzz our 3 sons (usually a number 2) and I’m really kinda happy with myself that I took that on, yet my parents are constantly lecturing me about it. LOL! Saying that the boys should have “proper” haircuts and proper length hair. Years ago the boys had slightly more hair, and they look back at pictures and insist they prefer the super short, so we’ve stuck with it and we all like how it easy it is, how easy it is on shampoo, rinsing your hair in the shower, etc.
As for me, I’ve been short or ear/chin length for the past 10+ years, and as some of you have mentioned, a short cutesy cut usually means more maintenance. So I was having to go somewhere decent to get a cut I could still style…ugh, every 6-8 weeks. I loved my stylist, we became good friends actually, but I just didn’t love spending my time that way. I finally decided, just in the past six months to let it grow to at least a length where I can put it up. And I just can’t believe how freeing it has been! I am saving SO much time in the morning, only having to wash it every second day, now that I can wear it up! And I’m determined to only have to go for a trim every 4 months or thereabouts. Sounds silly to be excited about it, but this little thing (hair length) along with a new dedication to my weekly meal plan and grocery list has REALLY changed my life these past few months, LOL! Now I just need to stop being addicted to homeschool planning and I will REALLY have time on my hands, hee hee!
i get mine cut every 3-4 months, but color it myself. I keep my hair med-long so it’s very low mainenance…most days I just let it air dry and go with the wavy look 🙂
Jenni, a FlowBee!! I remember those commericals. It’s like a combination vacuum cleaner and razor. That’s great. I’ve had a rough day and you almost made me laugh. I think I will google it now and then I will laugh. Thanks!
By the way, my husband cuts his own hair, too, with an electric razor (w/ attachements) and it saves a ton of money.
For several years I rarely got my hair cut and it was pretty long. Usually I trimmed the bangs myself, and could trim the ends if needed. Currently I’m trying a short cut and am going every couple of months. I just had my second cut and cringed at the cost. This will take some getting use to. Not sure I will stick with this. It was much simpler just trimming myself as needed. 😉
In my experience short hair is only easier when it is super short. I can literally towel dry and rub in some wax or pomade and poof, I’m done. But, if it grows out more than 4-5 weeks, it’s a major pain and requires a lot of work to make it look like anything. I prefer super short! I liked mine when it was long, too, but with so much gray, I would leave it down to hide the gray roots and then be miserably hot.
