    Good morning~

Very quickly, does anyone happen to know of some good books to teach biomes/habitats?  That’s our topic of study for science this year, and I feel like my 1st grader is getting left out a bit as the books seem to be over her head.  Any ideas would be appreciated!  Thanks in advance!

The only books I know that may cover this is a series by Craighead George. The titles are One Day in the Rainforest, One Day on the Prairie, One Day in the Desert. There are others but I’m blanking at the moment.

I have not read them but my kids say they talk about the animals that live there and the plants and such. They are short chapter books so a 1st grader should be able to follow them fairly easily.

My son studied biomes and habitats a few years ago and the series Biomes of North America by Rebecca L. Johnson was part of his science curriculum. Each book is about 45-50 pages with large print and plenty of high quality photographs. The titles are: A Walk in the Boreal Forest, A Walk in the Deciduous Forest, A Walk in the Dessert, A walk in the Prairie, A Walk in the Rain Forest, A Walk in the Tundra, A Journey into an Estuary, A Journey into a Lake, A Journey into the Ocean, A Journey into a River, and A Journey into a Wetland. He was at a first grade reading level and needed a little help with some of the words. Usually we took turns reading. I think that I enjoyed them as much as he did. He loved the books and would request them to read or to be read to at other times as well. These books contain a wealth of information and draw the reader in into each of the biomes in a personal way. In fact, his older sister who was a sixth grader at the time would borrow the books to read herself.

Thank you!  I’ll have to take a peak at those!  Smile
