We’re going to take a little rabbit trail next week and explore volcanoes and earthquakes. I checked out a nice stack of books with lovely photos from the library, have the Eyewitness DVD to watch, the Hands of a Child lapbook to work on.
The one thing I would love to find is a living story about volcanoes/earthquakes. My boys are 6.5 and 4.5. Have you read anything that would work?
There is also a Magic Tree House title Vacation Under the Volcano, a Magic School Bus regular picture book The Magic School Bus Blows Its Top, and a Magic School Bus Chapter book Voyage to the Volcano.
There is also a Magic Tree House for earthquakes (Earthquake in the Early Morning).
Not top quality literature, but easy enough that your ages would be able to enjoy them.
Hill of Fire by Thomas Lewis. Early reader type book about a farmer in Mexico who loses his field when the volcano Paricutin forms in the middle of it.
Just remembered a story book on this: Madam How and Lady Why by Charles Kingsley . Here is Yesterday’s Classics’ description but it may be free online (check Project Gutenberg and others)
Introduces children to geology through conversations about earthquakes, volcanoes,
coral reefs, and so on. Encourages children to wonder about the distinctive features of
the landscape around them and how they came to be the way they are. Ages 10-14
295 pages
It is a bit above your kids ages though, so not sure it will help in this instance!
