Would you consider the Grandma’s Attic series twaddle, anyone?

Not at all! They are very insightful..LOL..sweet and endearing, learning from Grandma on how it was when she was a child. The things she did that was right and the things she did that were wrong. A great tool for learning the time period, responsibilities of the time period, obedience and lessons that grandma learned!

My boys love them! HTH! 🙂

My daughter loved those! She read them at about age 9, but just got one back out the other day to read again for fun reading time. She’s now 12 😉

My daughther  also loves these! I started reading them aloud to her when she was six and now at ten she’s still reading them to herself. I would not put them in the twaddle category. They have great lessons, and spark converasations. I would highly reccomend them.

I have been reading the first one aloud to my five-year-old. I wouldn’t consider it twaddle either. My daughter really enjoys them, and the chapters are short enough that she doesn’t lose interest before I’m done reading.  Each chapter has really great life lessons on things like obedience, humility (as opposed to vanity), faith, generosity, productivity vs laziness, etc.  We have really enjoyed reading them together and look forward to working our way through the rest of the series.  I would say these books are good read-alouds for children as young as five.  I’m not sure at what age I’d consider them suitable for independent reading, but I’m thinking maybe third or fourth grade? It would be a great first chapter book for an independent reader, I think.  The language is not difficult and the chapters are short.

Definitely not twaddle — wonderful books!!   If you enjoy them, you’ll probably enjoy Caddie Woodlawn as well.

My mom read the first few outloud when I was little, then I read the rest. I have such fond memories of them. Now my daughters are reading my old set. We love these books! Not twaddle at all when the stories and lessons stay with you for so many years and you want to pass them on to your children.

Just wanted to say that I realize many are posting about their dd 🙂 Wanted to give another thumbs up for boys reading them too! Gma not only tells about her life she talks about her whole family including her brothers. My boys don’t mind reading about girls 😉 Thought this might help someone!

So SO glad to know this. I had a couple of these on my shelf a few years ago and gave them away and then a friend reccommended them to me last week.

I also did not know that they are based on true stories.

    Thanks all!

Are these in the public domain?  (ie, are there ebooks out there?)

She wrote lots of things!   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arleta_Richardson

They were first first published in 1974 and have been reprinted. They are available as an ebook for Kindle, but you have to pay for it.

    They sound wonderful.

One of my favorite memories is my first grade teacher reading these books aloud! Thanks for reminding me about these-I’ll have to dig up my copies and start reading them to my daughter!
