Well, it seems this is our year to have a language arts/grammar focus. After some research, thought, and prayer I’m trying out two new programs and wondered if anyone here has used these before for similar ages? Here is what is coming to my house:

For my 1st grade daughter and 2nd grade son Queen’s Language Lessons for the Very Young Volume 1. I like that this will be gentle and rotate between grammar, picture study, narration, and copywork (that is centered on poetry and often related to a picture study subject like owls). I think they both are ready for this level and will enjoy it. With all the medical challenges we have going with Mason and the many appointments for him it also gives them something fun and independent to do.

For my 6th grade daughter I really struggled between Queen’s Language Lessons Elementary 2 and something more thorough. I ended up choosing Analytical Grammar. I like that it does not need to happen all year, but is very thorough. We will break it into 3 seasons over 2-3 years as suggested. 10 weeks, 7 weeks, and 17 weeks are the length of each season. They look at grammar as a finite body of knowledge to master instead of a decades on end repetitious curricula like Easy Grammar or others.

What about you? Have you used any of these before?

We are using Queen’s Language Lessons right now.  We are using for the Very Young and the Elementary Child.  I started last year with a 2nd grader and we did both book 1 and 2 of for the Very Young.  We didn’t do all the copywork because we have something else for that so it made the book go quicker.  She is now using for the Elementary Child book 1 and I expect we’ll get book 2 done also this year.  My 1st grader started for the Very Young book 1 this year and I also expect she will finish both books 1 and 2.  We like them a lot.  I like how they are easy to understand and short lessons.  The girls have retained more than I thought they would.  I am thinking that next year I want something that will be more challenging for my oldest.  I haven’t done any looking into what to use yet, though.  When I was ready to look, I was going to see what I could find on here.  I’ll have to look Analytical Grammar up.

We’re currently using AG. I wouldn’t say it’s a favorite subject:) But I like that it doesn’t take all year, every year, as you mentioned.  It gets to the point in a reasonable amount of time, and she seems to get the concepts, overall.  :)Gina
