What are some recommendations for a one year grammar curriculum that covers “everything”?

Get Smart Grammar by English Grammar Revolution covers all of grammar and is the best I’ve seen. I’ve successfully used it with a group. It does not cover mechanics and usage which are language arts skills dependent upon grammar, but not grammar itself.

Our Mother Tongue is another one year option.

We are using Step by Step Grammar. There are two books but one could easily finish them in one year if desired. It’s a pretty straight forward program and very inexpensive. My daughter is making progress but the diagramming can be rather confusing sometimes.

I just can’t justify the expense of Analytical Grammar of Get Smart Grammar. It just seems like way too much money for grammar. I’m debating whether or not I will continue with Step by Step Grammar book 2 or switch to Our Mother Tongue. Many people also use Easy Grammar Plus for a one year program. The book is super thick though. It seems like it would take a while to get through it.

It should say or Get Smart Grammar.

I really like Easy Grammar. We are finishing Easy Grammar Plus, we started at the beginning of the school year. Doing 2 pages/day.

Melanie – why are you thinking of stopping and switching? This is a 2 level program correct? Petitemom – what ages did you use with Easy Grammar Plus? Also, What grammar did they have prior? Did you use the yearly ones prior or just this one as a one year program? To BOTH – did you do this with them or did they do something independently?  I’m also searching

Misty-As I mentioned before, the sentence diagramming can get a little confusing. We are going to complete Book 1 and then see how my daughter’s retention is. If she’s still struggling with the material, I may switch to Our Mother Tongue. My daughter is gaining a good understanding of grammar but neither of us can remember all the diagramming rules at this point. I take a very relaxed route with grammar. We only do grammar 3x a week and I keep the lessons fairly short-15 min or so.

I used Easy Grammar Plus with my son around the 8th grade. He did well with it but my daughter wasn’t retaining the information from that program at all. It was too easy to do the worksheet without any real comprehension.

My son worked through Simply Grammar before using Easy Grammar Plus. My daughter has had a smattering of grammar through the years-Grammar land, GUM drops grammar, some Language Lessons for the Intermediate Child and one of the Queen’s Language Lessons books as well. We just started Step by Step Grammar this past year and she is finishing up 7th grade.

It was my second year using Easy grammar, we started w/Grade 4 (since we had done practically no grammar) and skipped to the Plus since a lot was the same thing in between. My kids are now in 6th and 8th grade ( they are at the same level pretty much). I read the explanations when I thought it was a new concept for them, otherwise just gave them the sheets and tried the best I could to explain their mistakes. I found it pretty easy to use apart from a couple things that I didn’t understand myself!! (had to call them a couple times to clarify some things but it is probably because I have never learned them, English not being my 1st language).

Sometimes it sticks, sometimes it doesn’t. I don’t know if there is such a program that would cover everything in one year and that would stick. Work in progress here!
