  • Has anyone used Emma Serl?

Someone recommended primary and intermediate language lessons and they seem like they fit perfectly into the Charlotte Mason approach. Does anyone have any input?

We are using PLL and loving it! What exactly do you want to know?

Here is an older discussion that mentions the Emma Serl books. That information might be helpful too.

Yes, we use them here; I am very pleased. We are currently using the Primary LL; have been for 1 1/2 yrs.

What do you want to know, specificly?

We are currently using it as well (actually, it’s my grandmother’s from when she was in elementary school–VERY NEAT) and our 3rd grader can’t seem to get enough.  She looks forward to these lessons each day.

I use PLL, too. We do most of it orally and I skip the dictation as I use SW for that. We like it, though.

My DD, 4th uses ILL right now, and enjoys it, I think it’s very CM.

My DS, 1st will use PLL next yr in 2nd.  We used it before with his sisters.

We do most PLL orally, and I think ILL is a Big jump, and I req. most of that to be done on paper, once I go over it with the girls.  *A plus is that they’re inexpensive and non-consumable, if that’s an issue.

We also have enjoyed using them.  I don’t worry too much about doing every single lesson, and most of it is done orally.  Actually I was just thinking today how I liked today’s PLL lesson with my son – It gave several examples of sentences using “an” and “a”.  Then it asked him to observe when the two words were used.  So easy, no preparation time, and yet he was able to get the idea very easily.  How nice to have a simple coversation outside in the fresh air (we were sitting on the porch steps because it was just a pretty morning) without any extra hassles.

I should add that 95% we do orally, too. My son has good penmanship, but he dislikes writing. It’s flexible. Also, I recommend using the Teacher’s Guide:

I use these as well.  My 8 yr. old uses PLL.  We used it last year and this year and will start ILL next year.  We love it.  What would you like to know?

If you like public domain books this is very similar to Emma Serl’s PLL.

    Free is always nice. 🙂

Thanks for that Sheldon’s link, Penny.  What age/grade would you use this with — lower primary or upper primary?

http://books.google.com/books?id=NpcAAAAAYAAJ&oe=UTF-8 is a much better link than the one I gave earlier. I would say the age range is about the same for this as ES PLL so 2nd or 3rd grade. I have also posted the next level of Sheldons in the event others may like to use it.
