I have bought whole grains from Breadbeckers and been very impressed with their products and customer service, I have also purchased from Pleasant Hill Grain – I am looking at Emergency Essentials and wonder if their buckets of grain are sorted and ready for the grain mill, or would I need to sort through before use?
Who do you all buy from and what do you like about them?
I’ve bought from Emergency Essentials and did not have to sort through. I do sort through beans, but I always sort through beans. But I’ve had no trouble with wheat or grouts or whatever there. I have bought from them, Montana Wheat and a few other places. I like the delivery at Emergency Essentials although I occasionally find better prices elsewhere. I get most of my equipment and things like that from EE.
Thanks Michelle, I will give them a go then – I had to sort my beans but I did expect that, was not sure about the grain. Anyone else with a favorite supplier?
Azure Standard is good if you have delivery in your area. Whole Foods will typically give you a 10% discount if you buy it in bulk. Just talk to the manager in charge of the bins and they’ll let you order straight from their catalag which includes a ton of stuff they don’t sell in the store. I also use Emergency Essentials and Pleasant Hill Grain. I have never used Shelf Reliance but I have friends that do and they like it (not sure on the price though).
Thanks, I found Shelf Reliance a little pricey though I have bought a few things from them. I will check Azure, but I don’t think they deliver here. I did not know that about Whole Foods, so that is useful, thanks so much. It is always better to find out from people who know what they are doing and who have some experience. Linda :))
I’m not sure on pricing compared to these other options, but I’ve recently bought some bulk grains from Amazon through Subscribe & Save from Great River Milling. I’ve been pleased thus far.
Not to change the subject too much, but does anyone know what those little black ball-like things are in my wheat berries?
Kim, they are little bugs. I think they are dead if rolled up, but don’t quote me. I just remove them as I use the grain; I pick them out with my fingers. I’m sure I’ve ground them up, too-still here!
Be sure to put a bay leaf in with your grain as that is a natural insecticide. Also, keep an oxygen absorber in, too. If you have a lot and are concerned, pick them out and then freeze the grain; that will keep any eggs from hatching.
