I have been looking into graduation requirements for the state of MI, as my son is going to be starting high school this coming year (I don’t know when that happened 🙂 ). What I found is that most states (with the exception of PA and NY) do not have graduation requirements for homeschoolers. The requirements only pertain to public school students. Is this correct information? I looked at the MI homeschool laws document and it says nothing about graduation requirements. I plan on using the public school requirements as a guide, but other than that, will we just need to plan according to college requirements, if he chooses to attend?
Yep. You get to decide what constitutes graduation requirements in most states. One helpful thing to do is look at a few colleges in your state to get an idea of what they expect kids to have done, to guide you. Look for ‘admission criteria’. Also, many colleges look more at the ACT or SAT score for a homeschooler than at any transcript you make, because it is independently graded. 😉
Thank you, Ann. I did look there, but what I found was general requirements for homeschooling. I couldn’t find anything regarding graduation. Everywhere else I’ve looked says MI graduation requirements don’t pertain to homeschoolers. If you find the info on the HSLDA website about, would you please link it here? I was going around and around looking for it, but couldn’t find it.
