What is an appropriate amount to send as a graduation gift when you receive an announcement from a friend’s child that you met once or twice…when he was maybe 6?

Umm, call me crazy, but I might send a card, but that’s it. I draw the line at blantant attempts to get money from me and graduation announcements are some of the biggest offenders. I’ll happily purchase a gift or send money to close relatives and friends, but not others. I think it’s tacky to send announcements to everyone you know with the hope of gifts, personally.

ETA – I apologize if I sound harsh. I know some people send announcements because they are proud of the accomplishment, but in my experience it’s a plea for a gift or money.

I agree with Christie. We received an announcement from the granddaughter of the people who used to own our business (we’ve owned it for many years!!) I’m sorry but I was very offended. We didn’t know these people from Adam. I consider myself a generous person (I loan my books after all 😉 ) but that one didn’t fly with me. I’d send a card with a nice note that says something like, “Wow! Time flies. Seems like yesterday I met you when you were 6. Congratulations.”
