I’m just wondering, how do the grades today match up with the reader levels of McGuffey’s? Ex: would the 3rd reader be for grades 3 & 4? 4 & 5?

Likewise, what grades today do Ray’s Arithmetic books cover? Is the New Primary for grades 1-3?

I haven’t posted here in a while, but I found lexile reading scores for McGuffey on the Well Trained Mind General education forum a while back ago. The reader number DOES NOT mean grade level. The 3rd reader is higher than 3rd grade. Anywhere from 4th-6th grade depending on if it’s the revised or original version of McGuffey have slight variation in reading level. I thought about starting one child in the 5th reader for 5th grade, but the content is much more complex and mature than the 4th reader he just completed. I am thinking 7th-8th grade will be better for the 5th reader. Below, I will try to link the forum post from Well Trained Mind, but if it doesn’t work go to the WTM forums and search for McGuffey Reader Reading Levels in the General Education board section.

Well, I tried to link and it won’t paste, but the search function should work at their site.

If you go to Rainbow Resource’s site, they have a grade level assigned to each book.  They seem pretty accurate to me.  We use the Eclectic Readers (gold and blue set), and generally start with the Primer in K, First Reader for 1st, Second Reader for 2/3rd grade, Third Reader for 4-6, etc.
