I am taking my time with my son’s math in hopes that he gains a strong understanding of fractions and whatnot. He is 12, and we are working on Math 5 Teaching Textbooks. Alot of it is review for him, and we should be on to 6 very soon. Anyway, I wanted to see what any of you thought of Math 6 level of TT, and how that might compare to Math U See? I have been satisfied with TT, but I want the optimal program for learning the concepts thoroughly for doing Algebra in the future.
So, what I am asking is your opinion of Math U See vs. TT for grade 6 and above. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!
I have nothing to compare to as we just started hs’ing last school year, but my son used TT6 and loved it. I feel like he’s doing very well in math. Actually all my children using TT except my youngest as he’s only in 1st grade and so we’re using Math Mammoth this school year. I plan to have him use TT when he gets to 3rd grade.
Remember that TT has a very high resale value so if you buy it and decide it’s not right for your child, you’ll easily be able to resell it and recoup most of your money. HTH’s! 🙂
We loved TT 6 as well. The big difference I found between TT and MUS is that at that age, 11-12 the kids often want some independence and the option to work on their own. My dd was frustrated with manipulatives by 10 and loved the computer use of TT – it gave her the chance to use the computer! She didn’t even use the textbook other than an occasional review of a concept she was hung up on. That didn’t happen very often and this girl is NOT a math fan at all, but she sure doesn’t complain about TT. We are well into Grade 7 TT now and she is a happy independent girl, and I am a happy mamma. MUS is great for its purpose and I do know those who carry on with it quite happily, but for us, middle school was the time for a switch.
Thanks Melissa and Heidi. I really like TT too, and I don’t want to change it unless it is absolutely necessary. I’ve heard good things about MUS, and just want to make sure I’m making a good decision for the future.
