Hi everyone! I’m having to stay off my feet more and more here in the last weeks of pregnancy so I’m looking for free Kindle titles to read. I came across several by Grace Livingston Hill and read The Enchanted Barn. It was great, sweet and one I could see even letting my 12yo daughter read.
What I want to know is if you’ve read any others by this author and have favorites? Or ones you really didn’t like?
How funny – I just finished reading The Enchanted Barn the other day!! I’ve read The Girl from Montana, The Witness, Marcia Schuyler, Exit Betty, and Cloudy Jewel. The only one I started and stoped was The Search. I had some trouble falling in love with that one, and when I read the reviews, many others said the same thing, so I put it to the side and moved on. I have loved everyone I have read – my favorites being The Witness and Exit Betty, with Marcia Schuyler and The Girl from Montana tying for third.
I’m doing the same thing you are Tristan – trying to stay off my feet and PRAYING my little man makes an appearance soon! Praying you stay cool in this oppresive heat!
Oh – and The Witness – the beginning scene almost made me put the book down. The bullying because of his Christianity was a bit much for me to handle emotionally in my pregnant hormonal state, but I decided to wait until the next chapter to see if maybe it would improve – and it did. So just incase you are like me, and tend to be a bit of an emotional basketcase during pregnancy, I thought I’d warn you. Most certainly, you will need a box of tissues with that book.
Love her books :). Personally, I like the ones from the 20’s and 30’s the best – she seemed to hit her stride during that period.
If you do paperbackswap, you can order the ‘GLH collection’ books – where they have 3-4 titles in one paperback. I have all of those, but also several of hers in the original binding that I collect from antique stores, book stores, etc…
Oh, and I let my 12yo dd read some of the less ‘romantic’ ones. They are all wholesome by today’s standards, but I would warn you to screen them before letting your daughter read them, because sometimes her books deal with drunkedness, adultery, and what she calls ‘petting’. Obviously, those are dealt with as sins and in a Biblical way, but I don’t think they are appropriate topics for my little girl. Just thought you should know that going in :).
Yes, I am a hormonal wreck right now and it affects what I can read/watch…LOL.
And yes, I pre-read anything I give my daughter! It’s not easy to keep ahead of her, so I try to keep a list of books she could do down the road even, with notes if there are things I want to remember.
