We celebrated Christmas this morning before leaving tonight to be with my parents. My husband surprised me with an Ipod Touch! I’m so excited! And I’m intimidated!
What can I do with it? Are there any helpful applications for the Ipod touch for homeschoolers? I really want to utilize the Touch as much as I can to make life easier and more fun! But I’m clueless.
I have had mine about a year, I have lots of apps, recipes, shopping, book collections (important for our homeschool) weather, financial, all sorts of great things, including all my music. I also found it a blessing when my daughter was recently in hospital to stay in touch with people via email. I absolutely love mine – it is wonderful, enjoy yours.
How is your daughter? I remember praying during her hospital stay (I think you shared about that here).
I’d love to know your favorite applications! So far I have Daily Audio Bible, Stanza, Flashlight, OliveTree (Bible), To Do, Kindle app from Amazon, and Sprout.
Thanks for asking about my daughter and for the prayers, she had another spell in hospital, but seems to be doing better again now. It will just take time to get her strength back and she has developed awful acid reflux something she never had before – and she is allergic to the medicine, so we are trying different natural remedies now, not much luck yet. I imagine it will be a month or so, before she is back to her old self, but we are grateful she has made it this far, it was very worrying for a while.
The Apps I have among others for my touch are
Lang Fairy Tales
100 Stories
Classics
Great Books
Jane Austen Library’
Holy Bible
Hubble
Herb Garden
NASA
McCormick Recipe Finder
Whole Foods
Woman’s Day Cooking Assistant
Wi Fi Finder
Art
Lovre
German Course (for my daughter)
Vienna City Scouter (my favorite city in the world)
Germany Travel Guide
i News UK (to stay in touch with home)
list omni (brilliant app)
iDB Pro (expensive but great app)
Most of these I paid for, but some have free versions.
As you can see I love to read, so have all these great books and stories on the poddy – nice when you are on a journey or hanging out at appointments.
Hope this helps. Linda
Clz Books (which I use to upload my library and then I don’t buy duplicate books)
I’m not sure if you’ve had the chance to check out the link to my blog which I posted earlier. In it I review 37 different apps that we are using (or not because they aren’t worth it) for school.
Hey Heather – thanks for the great reviews! There are so many apps it boggles the mind!
I want to recommend iBird for nature study – it is expensive but terrific, actually better than a book. I can’t wait for more field guides to come out for the ipod – it is a natural use for this tool. You can check out iBird online.
I also love a little tangram game called TanZen – I have the lite version but will probably get the full version since we have solved almost all the puzzles.
Has anyone used the touch for planning/organization purposes? I’ve always been a paper and pencil kind of gal, but I just got one of these and I would like to figure out how to incorporate it into my homeschool planning and home organization.
I did see your blog post. Very helpful. Thanks for that.
I too would like to see how you use it for organization. One thing I have been doing is using the “notes” app to write a grocery list. It’s so nice to quick make a list and then delete it…no paper to accumulate in my purse!
I’ll sit back and see what other ideas you all have!
Stanza http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/stanza/id284956128?mt=8 and http://www.lexcycle.com/ Free e-book reader. You can purchase books through it but the best thing is that it can access free books online and you can load your own documents into it. Unlike the Kindle app, it can handle PDF files. There is a companion desktop app you can download to manage your library.
InchCALC http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/inchcalc/id293841496?mt=8 A great calculator for projects around the home because it works in feet, inches, and fractions. Only $0.99. There’s also a plus version with more features for those who do a lot of construction projects.
