    Hi There,

My daughter is a voracious reader.  I have such a hard time finding books for her.  I did not get to read alot of the classics so I am struggling to learn about books before I hand them to her.  But I find that most books for girls this age are romantic and fluffy or are all fantasy, unlike boys who have authors like G.A. Henty and Ballantyne to name a few.  I have required her to read some of those books as well, but after that what is there?  Any suggestions for girls this age?  She needs leisure books and challenging books.

    Many Thanks,

    Betty

    Betty,

Girls in my lending library love Lucy Fitch Perkins “Twins” books.  This is an older series that is slowly being brought back into print.  Perkins puts a set of twins in a place and time in history.  Check your library or Yesterday’s Classics.

Gene Stratton Porter is a nice author.  Elizabeth Goudge has written some good books for that age as opposed to some of her adult novels.  Classics such as Jane Eyre, Jane Austen’s books, Little Women, etc.  I could give you a long list of wonderful authors but 14 is a harder age.  Some may be too easy, others too mature (not in a bad way but maybe intensity.)

    Hi Robin,

I’ve never heard of the Lucy Fitch Perkins books.  I’ll look into that.  I just had my daughter read her first Gene Stratton Porter book, Freckles.  I wish I had time to read these books too.  They sound great.

Any suggestions for Elizabeth Goudge?  I’m not very knowledgeable about her.  Jane Eyre she will be reading for school and I haven’t tried her in Jane Austen yet.  Is there a good one to start with?  Many thanks!

How about some classics like Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen?

She has read some Dickens already, and we’ve listened to Mark Twain books on audio.  Which Jane Austen book would be good to begin with?

Has she read any L M Montgomery yet? Anne of Green Gables and the Emily series are good to start, if she hasn’t.

As for the Austen, I’d say Pride and Prejudice first.

Would she be able to handle Gone with the Wind? I read it in tenth grade, I think.

She LOVED the LM Montgomery books.  I was sad when she finished them all.

How is the book Gone with the Wind compared with the movie?

Don’t remember too much about how graphic it is, if that’s what you’re asking. There are details in the book that didn’t make it into the movie, which isn’t unusual. But it was written in the 1930s, so it wouldn’t be as graphic as modern novels set during the Civil War. Maybe someone else can help you with how graphic it is, amount of profanity, etc. (I think there was more than one “d” word and maybe an “h”).

    Hi Betty,

Have you looked at Vision Forum’s site for ideas on books for girls?  I don’t have a daughter but we trust their book choices for our boys.

The fact that I can’t remember a lot of what I read at that age made me think you may want to have your daughter start a commonplace book or reading journal.  Charlotte Mason talks about it in vol. 5 of her Home Education series in a section called “Young Maidens at Home” – it’s not for a summary of facts but rather impressions one has about the book, quotes, etc.

Are you using SCM’s mo  dules for literature?  If not, it looks like it could be a great reading list for your dd.

Has she read any Madeleine L’Engle?

All my best and happy reading!

    Richele
