Ok…so I found James Herriot’s Treasury for Children in CD in my library and decided to listened to it today while we ate lunch. We were listening to the story “Moses the Kitten.” My son, who is autistic, listened the best he could while the story was on. After we finished I just told him “tell me about the story” and then I stayed quiet (I have learned in a few weeks that is a big no no to keep asking questions and have actually noticed that he responds better when I just stay quiet waiting for him). He gave a short narration but from the wrong story!!!! he heard the name of the cat was Moses…and so it happens that his daddy (he is the one who teaches Bible) and he have been talking about the Passover and Moses for the past few weeks. His narration went like this: “Jesus said ‘Moses!’ and he was the sheep…I mean the lamb of God” 0_0 so…should I be happy he is paying attention during Bible time or worried he didnt get the other story…or what?
I would say be thrilled he narrated something from Bible time. Another thing to try that might help him stay on task with today’s reading is a picture or word list to look at (even just Moses the Kitten written in front of him).
I think it’s good that he related the story to the bible’s Moses. CM speaks of education as in relating ideas, and your son did that! Maybe when he hears the story again the next time, Tristan’s suggestion to hold a picture up would help him stick to the story. And you could ask for a narration in a different way such as “What happened to the kitten in this story?” while disregarding the names. HTH!
thanks Tristan and simple home! I will be putting in practice your advice! and it is true what you say, it is great that he is connecting and learning from the book that matters most the Bible!
I think it’s great that he is tuning in to you and trying to give you what you ask! He is using his words and communicating appropriately in the appropriate context. And he is making connections. I have a bit of experience with this myself, so I say…good job!
