My sisters eldest daughter is 14 and she only likes to read Goosebumb books:0( I am going to lend her some books that she might be interested in along with a list of some others she can look for at the library. I’m figuring that she wouldn’t be jumping right into reading Little Women or anything like that, but rather I’m looking for mysteries for her. I guess she didn’t care for Nancy Drew though. And we encouraged her to try Louis L’Amour books but she couldn’t get into them either. (We all started reading them around that age and loved every single one)
My dd13 loves the Redwall series by Brian Jacques. She is also really into Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle. Have you tried any Agatha Christie books? She’s the best mystery writer of all time!
My 15 yr old daughter has enjoyed Redwall, The Kindgom series by Chuck Black (there are several female characters in them), the Mysterious Benedict Society, the American Girl mysteries, G.A. Henty books, Bloodhounds Inc. (mysteries), Detectives in Togas (historical mysteries), The Secret Garden, Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Narnia books, though some of these may not be in a regular library as they are Christian. Hope this helps!
I forgot to say that for some reluctant readers, it’s helpful to see the movies first and then peak their interest and read the book. Or you can promise the movie if they read the book. We watched Pride & Prejudice (BBC version) to get me motivated to read the book. It’s working because this time around, I am keeping better track of the characters!
OH, another REALLY great series is the Wingfeather Saga by Andrew Peterson. I believe there are two books in that series right now. That was a big hit.
The Trixie Belden series is a big favorite in my home as well as the home of our homeschooling friends. In fact, our teens and soon to be teen girls have a sort of “Trixie Belden Club” going.
My 10 yr old is also LOVING the Mandie books right now. My oldest also read the Left Behind books for teens. And they would second the Trixie Belden series, The Secret Garden, and the 2 Detectives in Togas books too!
