Hi There,
I am missing our read aloud times of years ago. The oldest 3 are all in high school and usually go into the afternoon with their school work. I’ve been busy with my busy 8yo and baby. But in the evenings, when dh is traveling, I would like to listen to a good audio book while I feed baby or do some knitting and we are all together.
We have read/listened to all the Narnia and Tolkien books. We’ve also listened to a few Lamplighter Audio and Radio Music Theatre. It is hard to find something that won’t lose my 8yo. My older kids suggested Redwall. My library doesn’t have the first book available on audio and to purchase it is like $36 which is more than I can spend right now. I’d love something I could download and go. We have used librivox and enjoyed that. Some of the readers are better than others. We have listened to alot of the classics that way.
Is there are really good book that you all would recommend? A book with a more wintery theme? I thought of Swallows & Amazons but that’s more of a summer book. I don’t even know if I can make this time happen but I’d like to try.

We listened to A Wrinkle in Time last year and all loved it — 6 years and up! We’ve also listened to Silas Marner, Jonathan Park, Little Women, Sign of the Beaver, Witch of Blackbird Pond, most of which we’ve found at the libary.
Maybe my favorite for an 8 yo would be Dr. Doolittle. We have a version read by Martin Short and we all love it. Sign of the Beaver would probably be a second choice for that age.

If you are wanting to read Redwall, have you thought of asking the library to purchase it? Our library has purchased 10 books that we have requested in the only 6 months that we have lived here.

Hmmm… that’a hard one… something that won’t bore the high schoolers and won’t lose the 8 yo. I hesitated to reply because I don’t have high schoolers. However, my boys do love listening to audiobooks/dramatizations, so I thought I’d share a few winter themed ones we’ve enjoyed. We’ve been able to find all of these (on CD or downloadable audiobook) at our local library or through interlibrary loan.
The Long Winter, Laura Ingalls (It might be too juvenile for your high schoolers, but my boys (11, 9 and 7) all loved the Laura Ingalls’ audiobooks read by Cherry Jones. Her voice makes these books so enjoyable!)
A Christmas Carol (We listened to the Focus on the Family Radio Theater version. This is a dramatization, not a reading of Charles Dickens’ work.)
The Legend of Squanto (This is another Focus on the Family Radio Theater dramatization.)

What about trading off nights to be the ‘reader’? With 3 high schoolers plus mom you’ll only have to do the reading 1-2 times per week each. Redwall was a good one. Little Men, The Story Girl by LM Montgomery (centered around a group of cousins and friends and told by one of the boy cousins), we also loved the Percy Jackson books and they kicked off an interest in Greek myths for my crew, and Greek architecture.
Also check to see if your library offers downloadable audio books. Many do nowadays and it’s free. Or see if there is another library system in a nearby city that you could get a card for an check for audio books every month.

Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis came to mind. My 21 yr old and I are enjoying The Heavenly Man from Christian audio. It was a free audio book months ago. Here is the link:
