I just found out the play “A Mid Summer Night’s Dream” is here in town and I want to take my two children 9 and 11.  Could anyone tell me if this play is appropriate for my children’s ages?

Wanting to go see it March 13,2010…I need help quick!

I think so. We’re going to see it in April; mine are 10 yrs. old.

Have ya’ll either read a version from Nesbit’s or Lamb’s versions or listened to Weiss’ telling? I would recommend you do if you haven’t. That would make a big difference in their knowing what will be going on in the story.

I know mine would enjoy it! At that age, my ds loved Jim Weiss’ audio version. I agree with Rachel, it would be helpful for dc to read or hear the play first. When I was back in highschool we’d go to Stratford, Ontario to see the yearly Shakespeare production; It always helped to know the story line beforehand – even at that age. Enjoy!!

We just went and saw A Midsummer Night’s Dream about 2 weeks ago with our 8 yo and 3 1/2 yo daughters.  They enjoyed it very much.  FYI, though: there’s a lot of “persuing” in a very flirtatious manner because of the faerie king and Puck, so depending on how that particular cast plays it out, it may be more suggestive than what you’d want.  It’s all up to their own interpretation though.  The play itself is very good, and we enjoyed reading the story.  A lot of the presentation lies in the artistic license the director takes with the script.  All in all, a good show though!  Just know ahead of time the name of the game in the play is “romanic” persuasion that, in modern a modern setting (which a lot of play companies do now) could end up being down right suggestive.  Hope that helps a bit…

Thanks for all the advice.  We went to see it and it was really good.  The director did a good job and it only had a few lightly suggestive parts, I was holding my breath a few different times hoping nothing too suggestive would happen, and it didn’t.  The kids and I loved it!!
