We are doing Middle ages adn Goal & Life are both in there. I really am strapped this year and wondering if my kids would miss a lot with out these or would they be ok? What are your thoughts? Are they a “must” or a “if you can”?
You’re the mom, you get to decide. I am really excited to use them, but my house is less full (only 3 kiddos here) and my two oldest will be 10 and 14. Maybe you can hit them the next time around.
Just another thought:
~My oldest will be doing Life in the Word alone. Not sure how old your oldest is, but it’s just a thought.
I, too, would like to ask something about this. I am pretty certain we cannot pull of BOTH, so am leaning toward JUST the GOAL Bible study to do together with 2 or possibly 3 of my kids–I really like the idea of doing it together. Life in the Word looks good, too, but I felt like if I have to choose only one, perhaps only doing GOAL?
Any comments? I see this was originally posted four years ago, so curious if anybody has drawn any conclusions on this, or has an opinion?
We’ll be skipping the Bible resources. I prefer to use materials published by our church’s publishing company. After looking through the teacher’s guide, I don’t see it being a problem. I’ve also subbed a few family readers. SCM’s guides are so flexible that this isn’t a problem!
We’ll be using Penny Gardner’s Bible reading list 4 days a week (2 days OT/2 days NT) and the SCM Epistle reading on the remaining day. We’ll probably just narrate our readings.
Heidi, I’ve often downloaded SCM’s sample pages to get an idea if it will work well with my DC. Their samples are very generous and often last us several weeks. You can download one (or both) and give it a try before committing to the study for the entire year. I have both samples printed out just in case I feel like adding it once we get started.
We’ll be studying Middle Ages this year. I’ve decided to skip both. We are Lutheran and I prefer to use materials from our church’s publishing company. After looking through the teacher’s guide, I don’t see how skipping one or both of these resources will be a problem. I’m also subbing out a couple family readers…I love that SCM is so easy to make substitutions with!
For Bible, we will be using Penny Gardner’s Bible schedule. We’ll be reading 2 days from the OT, and 2 days from the NT each week. On Wednesdays, we’ll be going through the Epistle reading from the history guide. I may add some notebook pages from here. Or we may just read and narrate. We’ll also have our Visits to Europe lesson on Wednesday and I don’t want to overwhelm them with writing.
One idea (which I’ve used in the past) is to download the free samples of the programs you are considering. I’ve found SCM’s samples to be very generous…we can use them for several weeks and by that time I have a good idea if it’s a good fit for my DC.
