i see several books from this series exist for artists, composers and poets (Getting to Know the Great Artists: Monet, and so forth). Before investing in a few of these, i wondered if anyone thought they were good? the reviews on amazon seem mixed…thanks!
our library does not have them. i’m happy to buy the few i need, if they are worth owning, since they are very reasonably priced on Amazon. Did you think they were helpful?
My boys have really enjoyed them. They are short, but I’m okay with that. Some people would prefer to read a long biography but this works for us, for now. In the artist books there are cartoons as well as many of the artists pictures. In all the series they talk about their life, some of the challenges in their work and a little about other artists of the same time or why this particular artist/composer changed history. Actually, all the books have silly cartoons which my boys adore.
It may be a personality thing. This series has inspired my boys to love art and composers. They read these for fun. They try to copy the pictures. I buy them (about 4 of them every 2 or 3 months) because the boys look through them so often.
In the grand scope of things I don’t know that my kids will need much more than a short biography such as this. They are more likely to work in a science field than the arts.
Most of the art books are edited well. For Titian they mentioned that he did a lot of paintings that would be considered PG-13 and only showed those that were appropriate. Thus far the only one I’ve had a problem with was Botticelli with the Birth of Venus. A lot of parents wouldn’t have an issue with that though.
We own 7 or 8 of the Getting to Know books. My kids really enjoyed them as an intro to whatever artist or composer we were studying. Then, even after we were long finished with a particular artist/composer, I would catch my son re-reading the cartoons over and over. They are so reasonably priced on Amazon (where I got them) and provided lots of entertainment that I am glad I purchased them. Of course, I will probably swap them on Paperback Swap in a year or two…if and when we want to go deeper in study.
