  • I’m having trouble finding much help with specific books, scope/sequence for a 5th grader.  We used Ambleside Online for a couple of years, and then went to more of a textbook approach (mostly for my son who is autistic & needed that kind of structure). My daughter, will be in 5th grade this fall, and I want to gather books and things appropriate for her schooling CM-style.  She LOVES books, and I think this is the direction God is leading us to go with her.  I am nervous about diverting away from the facade of safety that traditional textbooks give (with their Units/Chapters all nicely compliled for a school year.  I don’t mind planning, but I’m feeling daunted about making choices for what she should study.

I hope to order the planning book & companion DVD, but I don’t think that will guide me in making decisions.  I can go from AO’s website/booklist suggestions or other booklists, but I wondered if there was any more specific advice about how do implement CM methods with a 10 year old.

    Thanks,

    Kimberly,

First, welcome back to CM! I combine AO and SCM…plus my own “tweeking”…in our CM homeschool.

I’m not sure what your question is. Are you looking for scope & sequence type info? If so, what I do is look at the curriculum guide on this site (love it! Thank you, SCM!) and I look at other guides such as my state’s guidelines, and the World Book guidelines. With all this info I’m able to plot out what I want to cover for each academic subject. Once I know what I want to cover, I use this site, AO, other “living book” sites, my librarian, etc. to chose good books.

Using the books, I plot out assignments about 6-10 weeks at a time on a calendar. (I’m a paper person and haven’t gotten into using computer calendars….yet). We read the books slowly and do the oral and written narrations.

Does any of this address what you’re looking for?? If not, ask again….or maybe someone else will help more clearly.
