Ok.. so I’m wondering if you’d consider all these twaddle. I’m clearing my shelf for some more NON twaddle books. I have a stack I know are twaddle but these I’m not sure.. maybe it’s because I like to read them, maybe it’s because they are cute?? Anyway, I’d just like your opinion.

Franklin books
Curious George
There are 4 cute ones: Where’s my hug by Amy Hest, Kiss Good night by Amy Hest, Counting the ways Little Brown Bear by Jonathon London and Sleepy Bears by Mem Fox
A couple from my dh’s childhood: The Horse in Harry’s room & Danny and the dinosaur: by syd hoff,
And a couple early readers from probably grandparents or me (before): Harry and the lady next door by gene zion & Fluffy books by Kate mcmullan
Any thoughts would be great.. I have gained a entire new shelf already and can’t wait to refill it. So suggestons of ones to buy for the 0-5yr olds that you couldn’t live without?

I consider Franklin and Clifford twaddle even though we have some. I don’t consider Curious George to be twaddle if they are the actual stories by Rey rather than the spin-off ones. I love the story of how the Reys strapped their manuscripts and some of their belongings to their bicycles and rode out of Paris just hours before the Nazis entered.
As for books for young children, any of the books used in the Five in a Row curriculum are gems.

I would consider Clifford and Franklin to be twaddle. If the Curious George books are written for preschoolers, those would be as well. Don’t get rid of the books that belonged to your dh! Your kids might want those someday, even if they wouldn’t make good schoolbooks. I haven’t heard of any of those other titles before.
As for books we love (mine are 4.5 and 6), Stuart Little, The Child’s Story Bible, Storytime with the Millers, any type of coffee table art books, Horton Hears a Who & Horton Hatches the Egg, A Child’s Garden of Verses, Stellaluna and a few others that are in my kids’ room, but they’re napping right now. For the age group you’re talking about, any of Eric Carle’s books would also be fun, but not past the age of 5 or 6.
I don’t know if some would consider the Horton books as twaddle or not, but we have loved them and read them for years.

I don’t consider the Harry the Dirty Dog books twaddle, but I could be wrong. Homeschoolshare does have a unit on it, but I don’t know if that means anything.

I’ll take the Mem Fox if you don’t want to keep it! She is a wonderful author, I love her books. Personally I don’t care for Franklin, Clifford and especially Curious George. I grew up with the Harry the Dirty Dog books and I have them ready for my son. I’d love to live a twaddle free existence, but sometimes sentimentality gives way (Harry the Dirty Dog). I don’t know that we can protect our children from twaddle their entire lives…as soon as they are reading on their own and can read billboards from the back seat of a car it’s over!!

I like the definition of twaddle for the early years that I read somewhere on this site that basically stated, “if you don’t mind reading it over and over, then it isn’t twaddle.”
We personally like the original Curious George and the Syd Hoff books (early readers). A great book list book is Honey for a Child’s Heart. It is full of many great selections.
In fact, I typed them all into my master booklist that I’ve shared on the forum before. My master list is my go-to reference anytime I want to add to our SCM framework. It includes the Honey for a Child’s Heart books as well as the books from Ambleside Online and Higher Up and Further In.
I say, “If you enjoy it, keep it! If not, toss it!”

Thanks everyone this has been a great help. I will have to look through them and see who wrote the Curious books, I don’t really care to read them but I do like the movie . Misty
