what do you do when you are getting a late start with CM education? I have just been introduced to CM and classical education in the past couple of months. My two oldest sons are almost 11 & 13 and in 5th and 7th grades. I have been working on reading some classics to them, but there are many words that they do not understand. For example, we started reading The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. They could barely understand it. We went through the first paragraph and wrote down definitions of all the words they didn’t know (which is alot), If we continue at that rate it will take forever to get through a book.

Oh and I wanted to add they are both good at reading at spelling.

It takes practice and time.  You may want to start with smaller, easier books and build up to books with “more” in it. Hang in there, and don’t let it overwhelm you.  Sometimes the meanings become clear just from reading the text a bit further as well.

When you come to a word that isn’t an everyday kind of word stop and ask them if they think they know what it means. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don’t. It has helped us increase our vocabulary. I have been surprised lately, they have been using big words that I didn’t even think they knew. 🙂 yippee!

I would also encourage you to start with books that are easier –reading is supposed to be fun!!  I’m reading the new LA book from this site and according to that and CM, stopping to explain or analyze in the middle of reading is a no-no.  You could glance through ahead of time and discuss some words or concepts that might make comprehension more difficult, and you could explain those, but don’t interrupt your reading.  I also agree that sometimes the meanings do become clear as you continue in the book.
