My son is having a terrible time with proofs. He likes the rest of geometry but proofs are killing him! I’m not much help. He’s done TT the last 2 years, but I’m not so sure the geometry is a good fit for him. What other geometry curriculum (or proof instruction) are good?
MathUSee! I hated proofs in school, too. But I understand them now. MUS has a lot more guidance through the proof process than other curricula. Some say it is too easy on the proofs–but they just think that because kids don’t get frustrated, I think. It worked very well for us, my kids kicked the geometry questions on the college tests.
Hi, I would suggest Harold Jacobs “Geometry: Seeing, Doing, Understanding” along with its teacher’s guide. Proofs are taught in a way that eases a student into them and have my vote for a true CM living book. You can read an in-depth review here. Fair warning, it is such an enjoyable book that you may find yourself staying up late to read it yourself, even if you’ve never before been interested in geometry.
Also, since I don’t know exactly where your son is math-wise, I wanted to add that the following two books were used in Charlotte’s classrooms to develop needed habits (such as reasoning and accuracy) while providing the foundational ideas that would be later developed in the study of formal geometry:
Practical Exercises in Geometry by W.D. Eggar
or
Lessons in Experimental and Practical Geometry by H.S. Hall and F.H. Stevens
Thanks! I’ll check it out. It’s pretty pricey. Do we need ALL the components–book, teacher guide, test bank, dvd???
Connor is usually a wiz at math. Blew through Alg 1 and even the other parts of geometry, just not proofs. Should I have him not stress over those? Is that enough reason to switch curriculum?
