I am looking for a good geography suggestion for my 7th, 3rd and 4th graders.  I am having a hard time adding geography into our history like I know I need to.  I would feel better with a separate geography program which is simple and to the point. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thank you!

We have also liked the Visits to… series.  Another good one for us was the Trail Guide to World Geography.  Right now my 7th and 8th graders are working through “Why Greenland is an Island, Australia is not…. ” A homeschool mom online made a schedule for her kids to work through it and we are following her plan.

Thank you ladies! I’ve used the visits to series before. It’s a wonderful program but it just didn’t fit us well unfortunately.

In case anyone is interested, I did just find this neat tool on Currclick for $1. There is a history scribe program also for $1.

My kids enjoy Geopuzzles.   They also like doing weekly map drills.  In addition to this, we do an occaisional map assignment from our MOH book.

What are you looking for from geogrophy? More/less activities? spicific regions? That might help narrow down suggestions or ideas?

My sister did Road Trip USA with her kids and they really liked the program. It is only for the United States though.

I second GeoPuzzles, we love those here too!  We’re currently just doing those, along with weekly readings from various reading lists (SCM and Sonlight, mostly) as our “official” geography curriculum.  We love geography–probably my favorite subject to teach–so very often, the reading leads to impromptu YouTube videos, Netflix documentaries, ethnic recipes, etc.  So fun and low-stress!

My kids really like the 10 Days in _____ games (there is Asia, Europe, USA, Africa, and Americas).  I actually like them too and have learned so much for just playing them often.  My youngest loves them most and often begs to play.  His favorite are Asia & Europe and he knows where all the countries are and has been able to label both on a blank map for quite some time (he’s 10).  They really help kids and parents learn where those countries are (or states in the case of the USA).

I have purchased them from both Amazon and Rainbow Resource, but surely they are available from other retailers too.

Beautiful Feet has a Geography study for 3-7th grade you might want to check out. It’s designed as a semester study but can be stretched out to a full year. It covers US geography (but not the west coast) and world geography.

Are you doing Map Drill? Or just looking for a study of a particular region/culture? Or do you want to discuss topography? Or all of the above :-). Geography actually encompasses a few different areas. Right now, we are just focusing on map drill and I think that would be a good place to start. Basically, we just choose a continent, print a map and then label the countries. The first week, we may label 2-3 countries (being sure they are spelled correctly). The next week, I ask them to write what they know from memory, and we add 2 more to that. This continues until they can literally fill in the entire map. Then, especially for older students, we begin working on bodies of water, mountain ranges, etc…

This is surprisingly effective and easy to implement! It only takes about 15 minutes per week.

If you are looking for information on cultures, topography, etc. I would recommend looking for living books that would ’round out’ their study of a region. I know the “Visits to” series has recommended living books that you could work into your kids’ read aloud or independent reading time even if the whole program isn’t working for you. The book lists can be accessed under the sample pages.

We are trying visits to NA this year but my kids actually know all the states from map drills so it seems a bit redundant. We use Sheppard software’s online map drills. They each do it once a week for maybe 10 minutes and they really learn it. For reading about places my absolute favorite is Halliburton’s Book of marvels.

Halliburton’s Complete Book of Marvels with research for modern pictures is fabulous.

pslively…where did you find those lesson plans for Why Greenland is an Island? I’m interested in taking a look at them. Thanks!
