I was curious if any of you have used Genevieve Foster’s books (World of William Penn, George Washington’s World, Abraham Lincoln’s World) alongside Stories of the Nations, Volume 1?  Or would it be too much duplication?  If so, which would you recommend more for a 10th grader who struggles a little with reading?

I’m going by memory here, but I don’t think there would be too much duplication. The Stories of the Nations is not as detailed as Foster’s books. Because Foster’s books are more detailed and longer, I would probably choose to do just those. The reading level is not difficult. The hardest thing with Foster’s books is wrapping your mind around the big picture of history as Foster weaves together historical events happening simultaneously around the world.

We did use Foster’s Augustus Caesar’s World a couple of years ago and enjoyed it.

Hmmm…..I purchased both “Stories” Volume 1 books at convention this past year…..

I think I will have her read some of those on her own as much for extra reading practice as for history.  Then we can do the Foster books as read-alouds since we usually do that for part of our history day.

That sounds like a good balance between the two. And you never know, she might enjoy the Stories of books so much she’ll read them all the way through. ?
