    Hi all,

I am wondering if  Genesis through Deuteronomy & Ancient Egypt is really covering for BIBLE, HISTORY and GEOGRAPHY? What do you do with this? Just read it to the children?

My boy is 7 year old. I am planning to do year 2 for him.

So far, I’ve studied about CM. The short study time is important for that age kids.

I am going to buy  the Genesis through Deuteronomy & Ancient Egypt book if it does cover for those three subjects. Also I am going to borrow books for Picture study, Music study instead buy them.

Could you check if the schedule planed enough for Grade 2, please? I’ve been doing it for morning and night. I’m very worn out! 🙁

Nature study, I found my boy is very enjoying to read the Burgess’s Animal book. We will go out for a nature walk at least once a week.

Literature, We are reading and Narration “Pilgrim’s Progress”, “The story of Dolittle”.

Poetry, We started today. I choosed ‘The child’s garden verse’ by Roberson Louis Stevenson.

Copywork, I actually bought the handwriting without tear before I changed to CM. So, I am using it for my son. After this book, I will change to Delight handwriting. Since, I am starting CM(Only few days), I give him a very little writing for now. He HATED writing.

Math, Also We’ve been doing ‘Life of Fred’ and Canadian Curriculum for now. I really didn’t think too much since He loves Life of Fred.

Does he need to read more books on top of this study plan? Like biography or more story books? He doesn’t read by himself now. He is very good to read together or listen the story or He would read a short story.

Also, CM highly recommend to read ‘Shakespeare’s book. Do I need for this grade?

I am wondering if you recommend the dictation or grammar for that age? I’ve done it. I read CM doesn’t encourage to do to younger children.

OH WOW. This is very tired listed post. I feel sorry to ask but need a little help please?! and Thank you so much!

    Hello Mimi,

I am doing Genesis Through Deuteronomy with my 2 kids right now, who are 6yo girl (almost 7) and just turned 6yo boy. My kids are are in 1st grade and K. It is enough academics for them. MORE than enough!

Gen ->Deut does cover Bible, Geography and History. It is a guide that tells you what to use when and then you have other books- like Ancient Egypt and her Neighbors that you actually read with the child. We really like the Visits to Africa which has more books that you read with the child and map activities etc. We do not do the lessons as written. For my little ones we read and discuss, do the map activities and just enjoy it. For map work we color maps and paste the name labels onto the map otherwise it is too much for them. It is written to cover all kids 6yo through 18yo so especially for the younger ones you can pick and choose what fits best for the your own family. For example, we read the Bible portions but we skip the commentary- its just too much for my crew right now but we will come back through this in 6 years when they will be ready for more by then. While I am reading aloud Ancient Egypt and Her Neighbors we have Ancient Egypt coloring books- Dover and Belleraphon both make them, I like the Belleraphon book better but both work to keep their hands busy so their minds can focus longer, especially my wiggly little boy.

Every family is different but I am planning to start Shakespeare in 4th or 5th grade, depending on how other subjects are going since there are so many things that step up and are a little more challenging around that age. However we have a Shakespeare summer theater in my town we may start enjoying before that as time allows.

Unless I missed it in your post, it sounds like you have everything covered except Art and Music. SCM has some great products for Artist study and Music study. While my kids are young I am just spending a couple months on and artist or composer and just showing them their works, or listening to their music once a week or so. It doesn’t have to be a full and heavy program at this age- keep it light and fun to help kindle the love of learning and curiosity and joy in the journey.

Have fun with your son! These early years are magical and there is so much to enjoy as they discover and learn.

Yes, Module 1 does cover Bible, History & Geography… Also cultural studies (I think that’s what you would call it). Many books on the list can be found used on Amazon such as Hungry Planet & Material World (we love these books). And I totally agree with using coloring sheets for this age.

My daughter turned 7 in October and we are doing this Module. Overall, I really like it but, she really needs some hands on stuff to make it stick (and fun), so I’m in the process of putting together a new plan to make that happen w/out having to search for ideas on Pinterest every week. If it works out for us, I will definitely be sharing. Also, I find the Herin is Love books a bit too much for her right now but, I’m saving the books for when we re-visit the Module in 5 years or so. (At which point my now, 2 year old will join in).

And we also just borrow Library books & CD’s for Composer & Artist Study. Per the suggestion on SCM we are focusing on 3 of each for the year but, a 6 week rotation rather than 12. So we will re-visit each one.

One thought about the handwriting is, if he is writing well by the time he finishes that program, then perhaps move him on to cursive. My DD is getting ready to start the Print to Cursive Proverbs lessons. But, if you feel he needs more practice, then perhaps use some of the copywork books from SCM as opposed to a whole new program which would likely go backwards to the basics for him…causing boredom and frustration. You could also assign your own copywork pulling short quotes and Bible verses from whatever you are reading. They have primary ruled composition books as well as a font that can create the primary ruled lines for you. Oh, and ThatResourceSite.com has copywork for each chapter of the Burgess Bird Book (currently chapters 1-15 but, by weeks end they will have ALL chapters.). Not sure if the have the animal book too or not. It is a $9.95 annual fee but, they have quite a bit of other great free printables on there too. And you can save them all to your computer for as long as you want.
