Our first year of CM and we are WAY behind (in my ideal timeline) in Bible/Geography/History. Overall I think my daughter enjoys the history and geography portion of it although some of the books and info seem a little “heavy” for us. It’s awful to say but we are both struggling reading some of the bible portions. Even as an adult the Old Testament is sometimes just not that exciting and hard to get into. Just being honest! Haha! We do a separate bible devotion each day so she is still getting some of God’s truths. Just not the historical pieces. We haven’t even started Herein is Love books and to be honest they seem overwhelming to me too. Not sure if it is just because I am feeling overwhelmed by being behind or not. Has anyone been far behind and just focused on some of the main bible stories and skipped a few to catch up? Did your child enjoy the Herein is Love books? Is there another Bible/Geography/History that I should consider instead for next year that might be lighter?
We usually either read the Bible story from Vos’s Story Bible or Herein is Love, but not both. It would be far too much for my kids to do all the reading and my oldest is 8, too.
Thank you for the question. I’m looking at starting with SCM history next year with my 8 and 6, (will be 9 and 7) year olds. I hope to glean from this conversation.
Personally I do not enjoy ancients too much with younger years. I tried it with 2nd and 1st. We ended up just focusing on the extra books (Boy of the Pyramids was a BIG hit!) and combined Egypt, Greece and Rome into one year. I understand using Bible as history text and it is fantastic! But we do a pretty indepth Bible study during the school year with the kids as part of a group.
So what I did is I would read what the guide had, do a recap to remind the kids what time period we are in, in the Bible and would read the other assigned books.
We did SCM Ren & Reff last year and SCM Early American and World this year, enjoyed by all of us. I am not sure my plan when we return to ancients again, but I think I am going to combine again and add more living books. I still really like the SCM guides for Ancients, but think I will combine again.
I have learned and had to remind myself that History does not have to go in order. Watching as my kids make connections especially using a BOC it really does come together. I like Early (& modern) American and World with younger kids because there are so many living books to pick from for those time periods. But that is just for us, I have a good friend and she loves Ancient history and doing it with her younger kids.
Thank you all for your input! I decided to go through the rest of the lessons that we have left and plan out the rest of our year and will combine some bible lessons together by mainly using Vos’s storybook bible. This bible is new to us but we are enjoying it so much more. I may pull 2 or 3 commentaries from the Herein is Love books but overall I just can’t see ourselves doing those books at this time but will hold onto them for when she cycles around again when she is older. We will also still do the Visits to Africa and the Boy of the Pyramid. After going through all this I think it cut the lessons almost in half but still with a lot more to learn. So I don’t feel as overwhelmed now! Whew! I will also take some of your book suggestions above for sure! I really want to stick with most of SCM for awhile as this has been the best year overall compared to other curriculum we used in the past. And I love these discussion forums. So encouraging and helpful! Thanks again!
