This is our first year using the SCM curriculum and the “Keep It Simple” plan, we are starting with Genesis-Deuteronomy (for 3rd grade). I’d like to add some extra living books to go along with the various countries in Africa we’ll be studying.
For those that have already gone through Genesis-Deuteronomy/Visits to Africa, have you created a list of books you’ve added and when they would be used, that you wouldn’t mind sharing?
Here are the notes of all the books we used last year for 1st! Absolutely loved the curriculum. I did add in The Story of the World so a few of the books were recommended in connection to that.
Archaeologists Dig for Clues – lengthy book, but great explanation of what archaeologist do.
The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton – General discussion about how things change over time.
House on Maple Street – General discussion about how things change over time (archaeology)
The Nile River by Allan Fowler (reading level 3.5)
Mummies, Pyramids, and Pharaohs by Gail Gibbons – Excellent, extremely thorough, easy reading (reading level 5.2)
Mummies in the Morning – Magic Treehouse book (fiction)
Mummies and Pyramids – thorough chapter book (reading level 2.9)
The Great Pyramid by Mann – lengthy but good information for teacher

Ancient Egyptians and Their Neighbors – lengthy but good information for teacher
Ancient Israelites and Their Neighbors – lengthy but good information for teacher
The Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt – research for teacher (recommended ages 8-12)

We’re Sailing Down the Nile: A Journey Through Egypt by Laurie Krebs – Cute rhyming picture book that covers many major monuments and cities along the Nile
Hatshepsut: Egypt’s First Female Pharaoh by Pamela Dell – great chapter book with lots of well-balanced details (a little too much for elementary age, maybe use in middle school as an independent reader)
Tutankhamen by Demi – beautifully illustrated by incredibly lengthy for a picture book. Info repeated from other sources
Tutankhamen’s Gift by Robert Sabuda – fictional account (picture book) of Tut’s life, includes info about several other Pharaohs
Tut’s Mummy: Lost & Found – great early reader
Beatrice’s Goat by Page McBrier – beautiful story about the Heiffer Project and a little girl in Uganda
Yatandou by Gloria Whelan – about a girl in Mali whose family works hard to get a grinding mill
One Child, One Seed: A South African Counting book by Kathryn Cave – beautiful photographs of farm life in South Africa
The Spider Weaver: A Legend of Kente Cloth by Margaret Musgrave – traditional tale of how a spider gave the weavers in Ghana their unique patterns
Ms. Frizzle’s Adventures: Ancient Egypt – fun but informative
Master Man: A Tall Tale of Nigeria by Aaron Shepard – fun story in comic book style
Ashanti to Zuly: African Traditions by Margaret Musgrove – beautiful illustrations and details about various African tribes.
My experience has been only with the first half of the first volume of Story of the World, but I thought it was a good match. I didn’t love the SCM Ancient Egypt and her Neighbor for my 6-year-old and also wanted a wider ancient history range than just Egypt. I thought Story of the World did just that.
