While looking for a way to give my high schooler some challenging essay questions based on literature readings without spending a small fortune on study guides, I stumbled across this site called eNotes. The link below will take you to the search page which lists 6 different “Literature Essay Prompts”. Each question is based on a quote and asks the student to choose a character(s) from their reading to apply that quote to, focusing on such topics as gratitude, forgiveness, state of mind, etc. You can use any book that your student is reading. I did not read through all of the prompts yet, but what I did read through seem to be thought-provoking and challenging.

I did need to sign-up (free membership) in order to download the single-page PDF files. They do have other study guides, but those require a paid membership. Looks like there might be other useful things on this site, but I haven’t explored it too thoroughly yet.

Perhaps these essay prompts will be helpful to some of you, as well.

If the link doesn’t work, just search “eNotes” on search engine and at the site search “Literature Essay Prompts”

Thanks for sharing. A friend of mine was asking recently for something like this. I’m passing it along. ;0)
