I have my 5th grader reading his book and she is begging me to assign her a different book. She is hating it. I also tried reading Archimedes and the door of science aloud last year and couldnt get through it. Is it just me? Do we just not enjoy this author? Should I make her plug through or find something else? How important is this book in the history of science and/or The history of Rome?

Neither of my kids greatly enjoyed these books. Both read the one on Archimedes at some point. There is a certain scene that will never be forgotten! That said, these books are definitely not necessary. No one (or more) book will make or break your history studies.

    No worries. 🙂

My daughter also hated Galen. She did read the one about Hipp…. I can’t remember his name, but he traveled around and made a map or soemthing.  She only complained a little about that one.

My approach was to make her read it, even though she hated it. It was a short book, one chapter per day wasn’t going to kill her.
