We will be going to Oregon with my husband for a Gospel Meeting that he will be preaching. We will have a few extra days to sight-see. Any suggestions? We ill be staying in Grants Pass.

(We are from Mississippi, btw, so this is a BIG DEAL!! 1st plane ride, too!)

When are you going?  That can make a big difference.  If it during summer, Oregon summer’s are nothing like a southern summer.  You always take a jacket anywhere you go ’cause even if it warms up during the day it can drop 20+ degrees at night.

Where are you flying in and out of?

Thanks for that bit of advice. We will be going this month. We are flying into Portland and taking a rental car to Grants Pass. We will be flying out of Little Rock, Ar because it is cheaper than flying out of Memphis, Tn which is closer.

So we need to take spring like clothes and jackets??

Yes, as a SW Washingtonian, you best bring a jacket and jeans along. You should check weather.com before you leave to get an idea of the weather, but seriously this time of year you can have any weather – rain, snow, hail, sun – all in one day. Not sure what to suggest for things to do down there, but you’re sure to have a great time!

Crater Lake would be fun to see.  It would be an hour and a half or two hour drive from Grants Pass.  You have to go to the south entrance.  The north entrance is still closed this time of year.  There will be snow up there.

There are Jet Boat rides on the Rogue River.  I haven’t been but my bro and sis in law went and loved it.

The coast is probably about a 2 hour drive.  You could drive over to the coast and head south and see the Redwoods, too.  The coast is ALWAYS colder.  It is pretty to look at but don’t expect to go swimming.

There is a wild cat place called Great Cats World Park in Cave Junction.  Probably about 30ish minutes from Grants Pass.  You’ll pass this on the way to the Redwoods and I think the Caves, too.

Oregon Caves National Monument.  You are probably looking at an hours drive.  You can look up their web page and get all the seasonal info and fees, directions, etc.

On the drive to/from Portland you will be passing Roseburg.  Just south of Roseburg (that’s where we’re from, bummer we just moved from there.  Still have property and family there) you can take exit 119 and go to the Wildlife Safari.  The Safari is a drive through zoo and also has a walk through and petting zoo.  They also have different activities you can pay for like being taken back into the bears house and learning more about them.  There are camel rides (not sure if they are going now or just on weekends this time of year), they’ll take you on a guided tour of the whole park, feed the lions, etc.  They also have a website that will give a list of their pricing and the extra activities and pricing.  Even if you don’t want to pay to drive through or for the extras it is a nice stop just for the walk through part which is free.

There is a museum right by the fairgrounds in Roseburg.  I think it is just called the Douglas County Museum.  It is good.  You can see it from I-5.  It is off of exit 123.  I think kids are free.

Portland has the OMSI science museum.  Check them out on the web, too.  i just took the girls t here and we had a great time.  You’ll want a whole day there.  The OmniMAX theater and a planetarium are also at OMSI and a submarine, too.

    Portland Zoo is good.

We’re heading out the door, if I think of something else, I will post again.

This past week the weather was in the 60’s and this week is supposed to be the 80’s.  BUT it will take half the day or more to get there.  Nights will drop to the 30’s – 40’s this time of year.  As soon as the sun goes down you’ll want a jacket.  If you head up the mountains at all you can get snow into June and will see it on the side of the road.  Snow won’t stick but it will be cold.  I moved to Oregon from Arkansas.  It was something to get used to having to bring clothes for all seasons everywhere I went!!

Y’all will have a great time.  It will be a pretty drive and there are lots to see and do!

I meant to mention earlier that Table Rock is a nice hike in Medford.  You can look it up online and get a little of the history of Table Rock, too.  The Indians went up there and set up camp when being pursued by the whites.  It gives you quite the view from the top, too.
