We are looking for some new ideas for good family movies that we can watch with our young children. My oldest is 7 and very senstive to any kind of visual depiction of violence (even very mild cartoony kind of violence). Right now, our kids’ favorite movies are Cars, Winnie the Pooh, and Mary Poppins and lets just say I’m getting tired of them always choosing one of those 3! (And we don’t even watch movies all that often!!) We also don’t like ‘twaddle’ movies – as in if dh and I can’t stand to watch them with the kids, they don’t cut the mustard here. Any ideas for things that we might be able to enjoy together as a family? (Also that would be worth owning – we’re overseas and can’t use rental services like Netflix, nor will we have reliable internet starting in January.)

How about Stuart Little? Horton Hears a Who? The Jungle Book (unless you think Shere Khan wanting to kill Mowgli would be too much). Is Bambi too much? These have been some of my kids’ favorites. Try some of the other Pooh movies if you haven’t already – Piglet’s Big Day; and The Tigger Movie.

Personally, I think Stuart Little may be a bit twaddly or at least too far removed from the book. Of course, that’s a sticky point with me for most movies. When I first read your question earlier, I thought of Charlotte’s Web, Old Yeller, and Where the Red Fern Grows. I didn’t mention them before b/c: (1) each one has an animal die; (2) two crows chase a rat in Charlotte’s Web (don’t know if you’d consider that violent); (3) Old Yeller and Red Fern have some fight scenes.
While I was typing I also thought of Pollyanna, but I don’t know how easy it is to find in France. Of course, if your dc is a boy, that might not work. There’s also a Disney version of Swiss Family Robinson that’s pretty tame if I remember correctly, although it does have a pirate scene.

How about episodes of something for a movie night? We are currently working our way through Leave it to Beaver and LOVING it. You can get free episodes on TV land.

If you have a subscription to Netflix, your options are many! Some of our family favorites are the old episodes of TV shows:
Leave It to Beaver
Dennis the Menace (from the 1950s)
Flipper
and many, many interesting documentaries, including some of the IMAX ones. We watched a documentary last week on fire ants, and it was enthralling. Even dh was really into it.
For movies that we love (some on Netflix, some not), try:
The Swiss Family Robinson
Old Yeller
old episodes of Little House on the Prarie (we own all 9 seasons and it was a great investment)
The Sugar Creek Gang movies
…and that’s all that’s coming to mind right now. I’ll try back later when I remember more.

also the DVD’s of the Waltons. I think you can even get DVD’s of the Brady Bunch, or other tv shows from that time frame.

We are currently watching Dennis!! Love it! We have been through The Beaver awesome! And also Father Knows Best. Yes, my kids like them too!
My hubby and I went though the Waltons too!
We also have Little House Series..love them too!
Love the Tigger and Piglet movies! I just love Pooh!
Toy Story all three are great..but Barbies are a little too suductive! But the movies messages are great! 🙂 There are sad parts..my younger son cries at number 3 even though he knows what is going to happen! Me too! LOL

Oh gosh. I can barely take Toy Story 3. The ending gets me EVERY TIME. My youngest is obsessed with it, so I need to make sure I’m not there to watch the ending. I’ll be sobbing! But since you mentioned that viloence bothers him – there is a scene with a monkey that freaks my kids out every time. The monkey is a guard for the bad toys, and he attacks Woody and Slinky Dog. He’s very freaky looking and sounding. Thought I’d give you a warning.

The newest Pooh movie is just precious. Dh and I really enjoy watching with our kids. It’s so sweet and innocent…classic Pooh.
Some others I thought of:
The Miracle Worker
The Fox and the Hound
Benji
The Adventures of Ocie Nash
The Rookie
And I don’t know if y’all will think this is good or not, but our family adores Despicable Me.

oh yes love the story line of Despicable Me..thought I wouldn’t like it at first..but really did! 🙂
I saw the Fox and the Hound at the theatre w/ my best friend when it first came out..shows my age…and we thought it was such a great movie until the end..and then we were mad for the rest of our lives!! LOL! Though my boys really like it a lot!
Oh..and what about other old Disney movies with real people like Herbie The Love Bug, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Apple Dumplin Gang…though that is silly violence, That Darn Cat and lots of other great classics! 🙂

My family really enjoys the movies by director Hayao Miyazaki. “The Secret World of Arrietty”, “Ponyo”, and “My Neighbor Totoro” are favorites. They are interesting enough for olders but pretty mild, in my opinion. Miyazaki really captures the innocence of children. We could watch them over and over!

Anne of Green Gables and the Avonlea series (you might be able to find it at a local library.)
Shirley Temple movies…and Johnny Tremain (put out by disney.) The older disney movies are good.

We just checked out the animated movie Lion of Judah from the library. All my kiddos ages 4 to 9 loved it. It will probably be one I will end up purchasing. I would highly reccommend it.

What a great thread! My DD8 is the same way. She is very sensitive to anything that may frighten her or that is climatic or emotional. DS5 can take a lot more.
Dolphin Tale is a favorite as well as The Sound of Music. I also discovered while we were on vacation watching TVLand that she enjoyed The Cosby Show. My 5 y/o was not a fan b/c he wanted something less grown up, but DD enjoyed it a lot and loved the humor. Another cute movie is Wall-E. And at Christmas the kids love The Polar Express.
It is hard to find movies that the whole family enjoys watching together. So much is either fun for the kids and twaddly or more grown up and too adult for little ones. Even most of the Christian movies for families cover topics that are too mature for our young children.
