I have asked this question before but can’t seem seem to find the post and the answers.

Does anyone use the children’s series of these books?  How did you like them?  Are they worth keeping?

    Thanks in advance:)

Haven’t heard of them, but am interested in the answer….

I’m assuming it is a Canadian series???

    Suzukimom,

Sea to Shining Sea is a set of books covering the 50 states. They are written on approximately 3rd/4th grade level.

    My3boys,

I don’t have any of these, but if I ever find any, I’ll grab them, especially if they are of my home state or neighboring states. I think Tristan (one of the members here), found a lot at her library and is using them. If you can find one of her posts, you can click her picture and get to her blog, where she talks about her experience with them. They would make good “spines” if you could find other books for each chapter or could stand alone if they’re the only resource you have.

I’m going to give a different review for these books, though we do read them. While I think they are a great overview, I think they sound a little contrived in the area of Christianity. If you have ever read the Sower series of books, that is what I mean. Some of the actions/thoughts of the characters are attributed to their consideration of God where the author has no way of truly knowing. Like I said, though, we do read these books, I just make sure that I explain what is fact versus what is guessed at by the author. I found it interesting, too, that Anne Hutchinson was seen as needing to be pruned from the colony in The Light and the Glory, but referred to as a martyr in The New Foxe’s Book of Martyrs. That one got us talking!

    Blessings,

    Cindy

I hope I didn’t confuse anyone.  The series Il have is a set of three titled From Sea to Shining Sea, The Light and the Glory, and Sounding Forth the Trumpet, all for children.  Authors are Peter Marshall, David Manuel and Anna Wilson Fishel.

My mom gave me the first one and the other 2 I picked up from another hsing mom.  I don’t really want to stray to far from the listed books for history in Modules 5 & 6, so could someone advise me if they are worth reading to my 7yo in particular.  My 11 yo has many books on his list that we want to cover and I don’t want to get him/me sidetracked.  My 7yo is waiting for his next 2 books via ILL or mail.  So, I thought it couldn’t hurt to read from these books for awhile.  He also has his literature list so we could just continue with that, too.

If anyone has more opinions, I’m all *ears*.  Thanks in advance.

Yes, I would say they are definitely worth reading to your 7yo.

I really like the books.  A lot of the supposed contrived Christianity has come for the characters writings or journals.  They truely put God into history.  Somewhere (can’t remember where I read this ) you can read how he did lots of research to write these books.

I am not sure your 7 year old will get into them though – except maybe the first one.  I am waiting another year or 2 with my kids and they are 9,10 and 11.  Most chapters have engaging stories in them, but some are pretty heavy in info. of government, etc.

I had found the Activity Books also.  I thought these would be great to copy things out of to add to their notebook with written narrations.
