Any input on Friendly Biology (and their other courses) and Guest Hollow Biology (and other HS science courses)? I was planning to do Guest Hollow but then looked at Friendly Biology and liked the looks of it, too. Why did you like or not like it? Are you able to compare the two? What is the work load like? Is there lots of reading? Do the videos provide good info/understanding? Are any of the required/recommended books audio? Anything else pertinent?
We will be starting 9th grade in the fall. My DD is wanting to be a forest or park ranger or something animal related when she is out of college. She struggles with dyslexia and math. Auditory and video learning are great for her. Looking for something that is not overwhelming but is will still prepare her for college. We tried doing Apologia Biology this year and stretching it over 2 years but it was not a good fit. We quit at Christmas time. She still talks about some of the info that she learned from it but trying do do narrations, discussions, the questions throughout the chapter, or tests was very discouraging and a huge flop!
I fell like we have tried and flopped with so many things over the years. I just want to find something that she will click with, enjoy, and will prepare her for further education. Thanks for your input.
I haven’t done either for high school but just wanted to mention there is a Facebook group for Guest Hollow Biology, you might be able to ask questions there…
I bought Friendly Biology for next year. I chose it over Guesthollow, because Friendly Biology looks more traditional. My dd likes textbooks and simplicity.
Guesthollow is more of a unit study approach, which both of us feel overwhelmed by. That said, I may incorporate pieces of Guesthollow, like the Knex DNA.
I like Friendly Biology’s textbook and worksheets better. For my next dd, I will either use the videos or add Biology 101 dvds, as well as some real books and extras.
I am switching out and adding to the labs, using ACE lab videos, Apologia, and The Illustrated Guide to Home Biology Experiments.
Thanks. I just signed up for Guest Hollow’s FB page.
Thank you, retrofam, for your thoughts. I think that Guest Hollow might be overwhelming for us, too. We need simple but thorough. I watched a video sample from Friendly Biology and liked the presentation. I am leaning that way right now.
