I’m thinking about beginning French with my boys, 7 and 5, and I am looking for ideas and/or curriculum suggestions. I’ve contemplated using The Easy French or, possibly, Rosetta Stone, but I’m not sure that I want to purchase an entire program at this point. Any suggestions on what I can use to pique the kids’ interest and familiarize them with some of the basics?
I can’t say enough about Rosetta Stone. My daughter loves it- she is 9 and learning spanish. My sons(7 and 4) love to watch her and learn along with her. We use it free through our public library website. Check to see if any libraries in your state offer this(we live in Ohio)
Just a heads up on Rosetta Stone. I do not know what is going on but we got going on it through our county library and then it was discontinued due to “contractual problems.” I then purchased an out of county library card in another county and soon the very same thing happened. It would just be a question to ask.
Rosetta Stone is discontinuing ALL licenses with libraries. When the library’s contract is up, it will not be renewed. So it’s just a matter of time before all libraries no longer offer this.
This is due to their new upgrade release. They decided at the time of the new release to discontinue library licenses.
We were a bit iffy on Rosetta Stone anyway. We did learn lots of vocabulary but were left a bit shaky on some needed grammar, and we found it hard to communicate with others in our language (which was Spanish) when the things that came tripping to our tongues were phrases like “The boy is under the airplane.” LOL
My daughter, 7 is learning French. We’ve used a BUNCH of resources including trying The Easy French. It’s a great program but it wasn’t for me.
We love Écoutez, Parlez! French Oral Program, you can see it at http://www.rainbowresource.com and I also recommend getting the Berlitz French Language Pack, the kids can read/listen to book written in French/English and there’s a few extras in the kit including Opal Dunn’s very helpful book about Helping Your Child Learn a Foreign Language.
I can’t help with programs that are computer based, we don’t use them. Also if you are just starting out with them in French, it’s okay to take some time and get something like Hop, Skip and Learn French (which we love) or another Cd that will teach colors, numbers and other basics. French for Children by Catherine Bruzzone is good too, we also enjoy LinguaFun French card game.
Thanks to everyone for all the great French language suggestions. I’ve heard about Ecoutez, Parlez!, and I just may give it a try. That title keeps popping up as a program both kids and parents enjoy, and it’s definitely helpful to hear about it from someone who has actually used it. Thanks.
Michelle
