Freezing Milk?

Any suggestions on freezing milk?  I know it can be done….  It is in plastic milk jugs, and they are filled pretty much to the top, so I assume I need to open them and take out a little milk from each one so they have some head space to expand during freezing….   any other things I need to do?

Anything I should be doing when I thaw it out?

Milk here is expensive, but we got several 2L jugs of milk today for 50 cents each, becaues the best before date is a couple of days away.  They were cheaper than it would cost to get 1 jug… so if it doesn’t work out, we are still better off having tried (as I’ll be keeping one out for use right now…)

We have frozen milk before and it is fine.  Like you say a little lee way for freezing is good, and it should be fine when thawed.  We’ve never done anything special.

Ditto Sheraz…I’ve never had a problem doing it this way.

When you thaw it, give it a good shake before drinking because it sometimes separates a bit.  Of course, this will be more important with full fat milk than with skim.

We do this all the time when we go camping to save on the need for ice.  No one can tell the difference.

What everyone else has said, tho I never open them and pour any out before freezing and haven’t had any explosion problems.  Very distorted milk cartons, but once it’s thawed it goes back like it was.  Definitely shake tho before drinking the first time to get it all mixed up properly.

Well, I have it in the freezer now.  I did take some out of each carton.  It is whole milk (it is for the 1yo) so I’ll keep in mind the shaking it up.  It was so amazing to find it at that price, I figured I better buy it up!

I figured that scince you can freeze breastmilk, that it should be ok….

Also, I’m sure my parents did it once or twice (although honestly a lot of my childhood we used powdered milk… yuck (now… at the time I must have liked it….)
