I am reading Free to Learn, by Peter Gray. He is definitely not a believer and comes by his theory from a very different route, but he is willing to call out what is wrong with education today. He does seem to point some early blame on early church – both Catholic and Protestant. So be warned. I don’t necessarily agree with his anthropology thesis,, but he gets to the same conclusion as we who approach it from a Christian worldview.
He points out the errors in current education models and the whys behind them very well. He also has suggestions on how to address it. He is more optimistic that change in the public sector can happen than I would be, but he is hopeful. He also applauds home education as a main way to give back the life to children that we adults have stripped away over the last 50 plus years. At least, I come away armed with cited research and statistics as well as noted academic proofs.
Worth a read, if you can get past his atheist viewpoint.
I read his book a while ago and enjoyed it too. My assessment would be pretty much the same– thought provoking but I can’t agree with him 100% because we come from different places, philosophically speaking. I am encouraged that I see more and more questioning how our society does education though. I did a blog post when I read the book but can’t seem to paste a link right now. My blog is http://www.lettersfromnebby.wordpress.com
