We have a reading program that we use for comprehension, etc. But we do free reading as well as literature for history, and I’d like a way to make sure he is getting it without having to resort to him answering more questions. I am thinking written naration may work… any opinions?

    Thanks!

I ask them.  Sometimes it’s just a ‘hey, what did you read today?’  Other times it’s a more formal ‘please narrate what you read’.  A few times a week they’ll do a written narration.  We alternate which books for written narrations…it might be a history book on Tuesday and their literature book on Friday.  Or whatever.  I’m not super rigid with it since they are always talking about their books and I’m checking in with them often.

If it is simply free reading, I also ask questions like, “what was that you’re reading?” “Tell me about it.” “What do you love so far?” “Oooh, what is she/he like?” “Does he/she remind you of anyone else?”

Other times, when I suspect they flew through the reading or didn’t give their all, I ask for a narration.

(My children each have a free reading shelf that they go to once “school” lessons are read for the day, so I *know* what they’re reading as well.)

Well maybe I will just keep it less formal, then, and let him tell me about it rather than write anything down for it.

    Thanks!
