I just wanted to post this and see if we all know where the free ebook sites are. These are the ones I know of:

I was wondering do you download books from these sites to a Kindle? How would you do that? Thank you Bunches

And Amazon, of course!
I do download books from these other sites. Most of them have a link to the various “versions” of the book available. (I have a Mac so I’m not sure if the PC method is different.) You click on the “Kindle” or mobi file link (some have options for with images or without) and it sends it to your “Downloads” folder. Then you open it in Finder (right click and choose “open in Finder”). Plug your Kindle into your computer via the USB cord; a small icon will appear on the Desktop and there will be a few sections you can open. Then take the file from Finder and drag it to your Kindle folder labeled “Documents”.
I think with the PC you drag it from Downloads or My Computer to the Kindle icon. Does anyone with a PC know how this works better than I do?

I am growing very interested in a Kindle. How is it reading on a sun shinny day(as in, can you see the screen clearly, or not at all like on a camera screen?) because we like to do our schoiol outside on nice days. If you read from it for too long, does it hurt your eyes, like a computer screen?

I have a kindle and download free (or purhcased books) as much as possible and it is super easy. If they’re from Amazon, free or purchased, it is maybe 2 clicks and it’s automatically sent to your kindle, no cord hookup necessary. If I download from a site like gutenberg then there are a couple more steps. Not much difference than what Heather described, if any.
I’d better download one so I can remember, unless someone else chimes in first. I have been getting more books from amazon lately and not gutenberg (which I love).
@Laura…I absolutely love my kindle. I do not believe there is any glare (have you seen their commercial?) My oldest boy uses it at times for books that were easier to acquire for history (2 clicks and we have it) and I take it with me everywhere. I have found sooo many suggested books from this site either for free or super cheap, maybe $1.99. I’m really frugal so although I really wanted a kindle I couldn’t justify the cost. My husband surprised me with it (I was going to wait awhile longer, then probably not even get it) and I just love it. It is so fun to find free books or really inexpensive ones. It is very gentle on the eyes and easy to read at the table or in bed, no holding the book open:) I still buy many ‘regular’ books…we went to a local book store yesterday and picked up about 6-7 books and I plan to hit another one today, so it hasn’t taken the place of those great finds either. Anyhow, it has been a great investment for us.

I love the Kindle too – have read it no problem in various lighting. (I do have the cover with built-in light that I use when it is dark.)
As said, for non-Amazon books, you download the Kindle or Mobi format (or pdf if you can’t get the other types) to your computer, then you can hook up the USB cable can copy it to the Kindle’s document folder. Or you can email it to your kindle (using the free address, not the one that will charge you) and it will get delivered.
You can also connect to the internet using the experimental browser – and if you click on a link to a kindle or mobi format file, it downloads it to the Kindle (not backed up by Amazon, so you will want to copy it to your computer later for a backup). Project Gutenberg has a mobile version of the website now too – I’ve used it to grab a new book.

Could someone tell me where to find the free downloadable books at http://www.mainlesson.com? As far as I can see you have to read them on their site. I would love to have some of their books on my kindle…especially for free!

I think you have to BUY the e-books from Mainlesson, unless you want to copy/paste from the site into your own Word doc and then email that doc to your free.kindle email address.
A lot of their books are on gutenburg, etc.
I download these books to my computer and then I transfer them to my kindle via the USB. I have a little folder I made labeled “Add to Kindle” and, after I move them, another folder of all the books on it, “Kindle Library.”
There is a kindle version of CM’s books, and I think I may have found a link here…(?)

And, re: the reading quality of the kindle, it isn’t like a back-lit computer screen. It does NOT hurt your eyes (a big reason I got one), and, yes, you can read outside easily. Think of it like a book, not like a computer. Super-neat toy, oh, I mean tool.

Many of the books from Main Lesson are available for Kindle at Yesterday’s Classics – not free, but very inexpensive. And I have found several of the Yesterday’s Classics Kindle books directly through the Amazon store – so you can download them directly to the Kindle rather than having to transfer from the computer. I know many of the texts are available for free elswhere, but these are very nicely formatted and include the illustrations. For example: I bought the Treadwell Reading Lit Primer for my Kindle for $1.99 and have been vey pleased with it…and dd loves having something that she can read off my Kindle too. =)
