I’m looking for some suggestions on where to start with a foreign language for my children, ages 9 & 7? I have no second language experience, other than a little bit of Spanish from high school. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

I know you posted a while ago, and I am brand-new to CM so I don’t know how much help I’ll be, but I thought I’d share what I’m doing.

The ladies at ADE suggested getting a head start on speaking a foreign language before teaching your children, so that is what I’m trying to do. I have been exposed to Spanish my whole life as my grandparents are from Mexico, but I don’t speak it fluently. So right now I am using a free app called Duolingo to brush up on what I know and learn some new words. I love it!! The lessons are very short. In a few months I’ll begin to use the Spanish words for things when I know them, as well as some simple phrases that I know to communicate with my kids throughout the day, such as what time is it, let’s go, it’s time to eat, etc.

I also plan on letting them watch their favorite movies in Spanish to get them used to the sounds.

If you are interested in Spanish, I have been using a completely free thing and we absolutely love it and we all have learned so much! It’s a show called Salsa and it is kind of like a 15 minute sesame Street all in Spanish. You can find all the episodes available to stream for free on the Georgia public broadcasting website (there are I think 40-something episodes). In addition to this, the Wyoming Dept of education uses Salsa in their elementary schools so they have a complete curriculum and lesson plans, again completely free, for each episode on their website. They are designed for teachers who may know little to no Spanish and even include scripts for teaching if you want to use them. Basically under their plan, you watch each episode and complete related activities over the course of two weeks then move on to the next episode. My daughter is 6 and she has learned so much, and so have I, even my two year old is saying “hola!”. I have no idea how randomly found this back in September, but we really love it!!
