Hi Everyone:
We have been using GSG…..I saw on her site, she has Stay Smart Grammar. What is your plan for using GSG? Are you using it for the 1-year program it is intended to be? Or are you adding SSG too? What are you using for Mechanics, (as GSG does not have that component of grammar)>
I did it as a one year program. I have Stay Smart to throw in periodically in later years. For mechanics, we did Junior Analytical Grammar Mechanics a few years ago. Now we do a periodic Editor in Chief exercise as a way to keep it fresh. Probably could skip it but it’s only a few minutes and I like the proofing approach as it translates to their own writing.
Missceegee, I had noticed a while back that you said you liked Get Smart Grammar. My oldest is only in 3rd grade so we are doing Using Language Well, but I have been wondering what my long term plan should be. Do you recommend starting Junior Analytical Grammar and then following it up with Get Smart Grammar? Do you still favor Get Smart? What ages do you recommend moving on to these other programs? I was thinking around sixth grade. I would love to know your thoughts!
I would skip everything from analytical grammar as I prefer the get smart materials. I used AG before I found GSG. I taught classes of kids with both. All kids and their parents preferred the GSG. We took a one and done approach in middle school and then an occasional exercise to keep it fresh.
Exception – Jr. AG Mechanics works if you want to cover Mechanics outside of narrations. Bear in mind it’s seeing it wrong and then correcting the errors. This worked fine for us, but isn’t a CM approach.
Missceegee, I like the once and done approach. My mother was a high school English teacher. I know she will eventually ask me what we are doing for Grammar. It may blow her mind that we aren’t doing anything until middle school, but it wouldn’t be the first time we have gone against the grain. 🙂
