For those who live in Tennessee (specifically the Crossville area) I had a few questions. Our family may be relocating from WI to TN if my husband decides to take a job in Crossville, TN. He is an Automotive Technician and there is a job available there.
Ok, I don’t know that you all can answer this but if your husband is also an Automotive Technician in TN how are you all doing? Here in WI he is paid hourly and the job would change to flat rate pay (I may have just lost you, sorry) and we are trying to find out if there is enough business/hours that are calculated to support our family.
How is the housing market? We live in a high cost area for housing and property taxes right now. Ex. our house is 1400 sq feet with 1.8 acres for 170,000 and taxes are 3400.
How is homeschooling in the TN area? I have briefly looked at the HSLDA website but wondered about families who are living there and how they find the laws – easy? difficult? a little difficult?
How about other cost of living expenses? I don’t want to get too personal but how much can a family of 7 expect to live on? We are hoping to increase our income while decreasing our expenses – wouldn’t we all like to do that right! We know with having 4 boys our food budget will be going up yearly besides other expenses going up just with cost of living expenses.
Any info you would like to share good and bad would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!!
I live near Knoxville, TN and my hubby is not an Automotive Technician so I can’t answer some of your questions. I will comment on two things:
First, I think property taxes are significantly lower here than you are paying. Property taxes depend on whether you are considered in the city, county or both. Where I live is zoned county only and my property taxes on a 1200 sq ft house on 1/2 acre in a subdivision is about $700. I think city taxes are around the same so if you had to pay both then it still would be less than you are paying now.
Second, homeschooling laws here are easy. We have some really great advocates from TN Home Education Association that keep on top of legislation. Although, I haven’t lived anywhere to compare. You have 4 different options from which to choose to homeschool. The laws are very pro-homeschool in my opinion. Though, it has come from great people doing hard work. 🙂 Here is the website for the TN Home Education Association website that has very specific info: http://www.tnhea.org/
I wish I could be of more help, too. I live in a small town in east TN. But i do agree with Britney about land taxes. I cannot imagine they would be as high as you are paying unless you are in maybe Nashville or Memphis. We have a 5000 sq ft house on 12 1/2 acres and pay much less than you are and I still consider it highway robbery. As for living expenses, I think you may find them lower as well. I rarely buy anything except books and we farm so i don’t grocery shop much, but from what I see and hear TN is very competitive in that area. Homeschooling is easy. Dh and I were on the THEA board for 8 years. A wonderful and dedicated bunch of people and one of our former THEA members is now a state rep. Some very favorable laws have come down the pike in the last few years.
HTH a little. Not trying to paint a perfect picture but in those areas, I think it’s maybe a little easier. Blessings as you make this decision.
After I sent that, I thought it sounded…arrogant. I didn’t mean it that way. We bought the land, not the house. :). And we paid much less for it all than folks pay for a small apartment in many big cities. I wondered why we got such a large house in the beginning but now with the library, farm, all the exchange students we’ve been able to house, etc. I see why God put us here.
