Hello Sonya – Just wondered, as I ponder teaching early-modern history next year, does the Module 5 history guide you hope to have out in the spring cover American history and World history simultaneously AS the histories occurred in time? I.e., if you’re covering say the early 1700’s, will it be two days/week of American history during that timeframe and World history also during the early 1700’s? Just wondering, as your note on the Module 5 write-up says it’ll be 2 days/wk American, and, 2 days/week world. Thanks!

The plan is to cover what was happening in America and in the rest of the world during that time period (1550-1850). For World History, we’ll start with Queen Elizabeth since that is about where we left off in Module 4. For American history, we’ll back up a bit to review Columbus and then start in with John Smith and Jamestown. Both histories will leave off around 1850 for this module and pick up from there in Module 6.

We won’t try to micro-manage the process and make sure both histories are covering the exact same year at the exact same time, but they will both be covering in chronological order the events that occurred and the people who lived during that 300-year time period. And the format will be two days a week reading American history, one day geography and Bible, two days reading World history. Does that help?

Thanks, Sonya. Is it another family study guide/teacher’s guide you’re devising, like the ones you’ve created for Modules 1-4? Using the living books listed on the history module-5 page, but as you said – putting the Greenleaf histories as independent reading for the olders? thanks again for all your work!

Yes, we will actually be releasing the family study handbook for Module 5, along with two new family spine books to go with it: one on American history and one on World history.

The Famous Men of the 16th and 17th Century book will be additional independent reading for the older students (grades 7-12). The newer Famous Men books are geared more for older grades, so we will recommend them as such and provide a new family spine.

The new spine books will each be in two volumes. We had originally thought we could produce just one book for American history and one for World history, but when we ended up with a couple hundred pages just to go through 1850, we thought it would be best to divide them into two volumes each. So look for Stories of America, Vol. 1, and Stories of the Nations, Vol. 1, this spring along with the family study handbook for Module 5, Lord willing.

Sonya, Thanks you again for all your hard work on this, and for these explanations! We’ll all look forward to seeing the final product sooner than later, as you state – Lord willing. Smile Appreciatively . . .
